Gators take advantage of miscue in win
Basic's John Anderson looked to have control of Monday's Southeast Division game at Green Valley, allowing three hits through five innings.
Thanks to a defensive breakdown in the sixth, however, things turned bad for the Wolves, who were clinging to a 1-0 lead.
Basic let a routine foul pop-up drop, then watched the Gators take advantage with a five-run inning, and the Wolves fell to Green Valley, 5-1.
The Gators' win gives them the top spot in the division at 9-1. Basic dropped a game back.
With one out and Brett Harrison on first, Nick Melino hit a foul ball about 20 feet from home plate. Three Basic players -- Anderson, Brandon Blake and Brett Wellman -- watched the ball drop, giving Melino new life.
Melino drilled a single to left on the next pitch, and the Gators went on to their best inning of the day.
Matt Harrison followed with a double off the glove of Michael Schulte, tying the game at 1. Three straight walks -- two intentional -- produced the go-ahead run before Green Valley's biggest blow. Freshman Chad Whiteaker delivered a bases-clearing double to deep center, and the Gators cruised from there.
Harrison also pitched a complete game, scattering five hits and striking out seven, to get the win.
Basic scored a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Anderson. Harrison put the clamps on the Wolves' lineup after that, retiring the last seven batters he faced.
"We did the big things at the right time," Whiteaker said. "This was a big win to stay atop the division standings. However, there's still much work left to do."
