Green Valley singles players qualify for state tourney

Green Valley's Evan Song and Jessica Hsu secured the final two singles spots Tuesday in the state high school tennis tournament.
Song defeated Palo Verde's Hadrien Saperstein 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the boys singles play-in match at the Darling Tennis Center. Hsu beat Legacy's Briana Watkins 6-3, 6-4 in girls singles.
Coronado's Jordan Fenn and Colton Pate and Palo Verde's Lauren Centrella and Shelby Zepeda won the doubles play-in matches.
Fenn and Pate topped Palo Verde's David Nichols and Danny Oka, 7-6 (2), 6-4.
Nichols and Brandon Parker won the last two state titles in boys doubles. Parker qualified for state in singles.
Centrella and Zepeda outlasted Del Sol's Katie Perryman and Katie Fischer, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The state tournament for individuals begins with the quarterfinal round at 2 p.m. Friday at the Darling Center.
Semifinals are scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, with the championships scheduled for noon.
The team competition begins at 8 a.m. Thursday.
