Hauck: Eddie Shore has left the building

UNLV football coach Bobby Hauck held his weekly press conference with local media Monday and, according to reports, did not invoke the name of Toe Blake or any other proponet of old-time hockey during questions and answers about the University of Houston, this week’s opponent.

During his remarks after Saturday’s 48-34 loss to Northern Illinois, Hauck dropped an Eddie Shore reference on the scribes and bloggers and TV talking heads, which would have delighted the Hanson Brothers of “Slapshot” movie fame and maybe even Ned Braden, the brooding center iceman.

“You talking statistically?” Hauck said when somebody inquired about the huge sums of yards the UNLV defense has been allowing. “In this day and age, ignore offensive stats. Ignore ‘em. We had 500 yards and lost.

“Eddie Shore, old-time hockey isn’t around anymore.”

The comment went right over the heads of some of the young bloggers who had never heard of Eddie Shore, old-time hockey or renting a classic sports movie on VHS.

But as Charlestown Chiefs beat writer Dickie Dunn told player-coach Reggie Dunlop in the movies, some of us old-timers thought Hauck did a pretty good job in capturing the spirit of the thing.
