Hawaii football to join MWC

The Mountain West Conference is expected to announce that it has reached an agreement in principle to add Hawaii to the league for 2012. The addition would be for football only with Hawaii expected to leave the Western Athletic Conference for the Big West Conference in its other sports.

MWC deputy commissioner Bret Gilliland, who was in attendance at the UNLV-Air Force game at Sam Boyd Stadium, would not confirm or deny the news, deferring to commissioner Craig Thompson, who was expected to release a statement at 9 p.m.

The addition of Hawaii would give the Mountain West 11 football playing members for 2012. UNR and Fresno State will also join the league that year with Boise State entering the Mountain West in 2011.
