Henderson resident eyes title

Henderson resident Kerry Painter hopes to follow the lead of Wayne Webb when the five-day PBA Senior U.S. Open begins Monday at the Suncoast Bowling Center.

Webb, a Las Vegas resident, won his first Senior Tour title a year ago in the event, but before joining the senior circuit he won 20 titles on the regular PBA Tour.

Painter is seeking his first PBA title of any kind. The 56-year-old right-hander led last week's senior tournament in Brentwood, Calif., but lost in the match-play quarterfinals to eventual winner Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis.

Painter has advanced to the match-play rounds in each of the tour's four tournaments this year and has led qualifying twice. His best finish is fourth.

Competition will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday through Wednesday, then continue with blocks at 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. and noon Friday before the five-man stepladder finals at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

• USBC OPEN -- The USBC Open Championships at the Cashman Convention Center continues through July 23, and no group is counting the remaining days more closely than a local squad that leads the Classified team standings for bowlers averaging 180 or less.

The K&K Bowling Services No. 11 team of Bob Godden, Bruce Burkey, Rich Hunter, Oscar Jimenez and Robert Yadao took the lead May 13.

Jimenez, competing in his first Open, led the team with a 610 series, followed by Godden (590), Burkey (573), Yadao (548) and Hunter (492). It was the 28th Open for Godden, a 49-year-old right-hander who added 633 in doubles and 631 in singles to take the lead in all events.
