TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 7 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
General Dan - Like the turnback in distance to this elongated sprint; his race two back is fast enough to upset these.
Swiss Ski - Sharp win in last and appears capable of repeating under Rafael Bejarano; is 0-for-9 wins at 7 furlongs.
Long Shot - Quarta Coroa
Race 2 - 2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
Walkin D Talk - Was well meant in debut with finished third; should move forward with that race experience.
Free Time - Tepid chalk off a very good second in career debut; was well bet at 3/1 and will be a short price today.
Long Shot - Cabo San Lucas
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Maiden claiming $75,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Appealing Afare - Two good tries by this Bob Baffert baby; now she goes for a high price tag, not that big of a class drop.
Marrymeonemoretime - Fought hard last time on a contested early pace; if she clears here, she could be tough to catch.
Long Shot - Good Vibration
Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $23,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
Cookie's Jewel - Rafael Bejarano had choices and opted for this Eric Kruljac baby; saves all the ground, grinds late.
Syncobeat - Ran OK last time first trip around 2 turns; he is capable of improvement and has good tactical speed.
Long Shot - Country Impact
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $46,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
Farmer Giles - Joe Talamo opted for this colt after a big run in last down the hill; must have a higher ceiling.
Leroy's Dynameaux - Sharp MSW debut win down the hillside course; is bred to go a lot farther than this distance.
Long Shot - Ivory Fudge
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $14,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Sir Ben - Same maiden claiming win in last, first time for a price tag; is well spotted to not be overmatched versus winners.
Elmer N Mort - Disappointed as a solid chalk in last; chance to rebound, his race two back is fast enough to upset.
Long Shot - Sovereign Lord
Race 7 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Gripsholm Castle - Huge class relief from two graded stakes for this; she really outclasses this group by a lot.
Welken - She loves the Santa Anita turf course; key is this is probably farther than she really wants to go.
Long Shot - Van Brit
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Follow the Crowd - You have a big edge over me in seeing the tote board; Harris Farm has an uncoupled entry, longer price here.
Portfolio - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; her race two back was not bad.
Long Shot - Mabeeawishcometrue
Best Bet - Gripsholm Castle (race 7)
Santa Anita Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/3/$17.20; Long Shots, 8/2/$13.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.40
Santa Anita Totals - 1,220/308/$2,032.40; Long Shots, 601/100/$1,017.20; Best Bets, 73/27/$144.20
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #2 Persistently (7/5) in race 3 at Aqueduct. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Wednesday, Citizen Balley won at Aqueduct paying $6.20 to win, $3.50 to place, and $2.80 to show. Stats - 72/52/$407.00
