January 29, 2010 - 10:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Call Me Dutchess - Has a big class edge as she drops from MSW to this; tactical speed to sit a nice trip.
Warren's Becka - Speedball ran a much improved race in last; repeat effort puts her right there.
Long Shot - Flashy Traveler
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds
Unknown Heat - Like the turn back in distance for down the hill race; speed aided by the turf rail out 24 feet.
Chicago Gal - Parking lot post puts him closer to the grandstand than you think; figures to sit and make one run.
Long Shot - Space Age Lovesong
Race 3 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Major General - Should be dead fit in third start off a 11-month hiatus; stride late in a good try last time.
Mensa Heat - Speedball stretching out around 2-turns; suspect will have an easier time of it than last down the hill.
Long Shot - Sovereign Lord
Race 4 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $10,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
Cherie's Dream - Sure to be overlooked; saves ground and the quick pace should flatter his closing style.
Onefunsonofagun - Tepid chalk in a wide open race; his last 3 races, if repeated, put him in the number again.
Long Shot - Life By R R
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Elegant - Last was a lot better than looked; tries grass and the hillside for the first time.
I'mneverwrong - Tepid chalk in another difficult heat; nice late kick and should be closing fast also.
Long Shot - Sweet Hanni
Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up
Victory Dash - Like the turn back in distance from 2-turns to this elongated sprint; best stride will come late.
Top Seeded - Gutsy maiden claiming win, facing winners for the first time; typical Rafael Bejarano late charge.
Long Shot - The Great Atlantic
Race 7 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $48,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
Smart Seattle - Dull try in the BC after showing lots of promise; if she doesn't run today, ship her back east.
Forbidden Paradise - Peter Eurton has an uncoupled entry; guess what, this is the longer odds price of the two.
Long Shot - Andina
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
Slew City Gold - Been working well and has solid pedigre for a FTS; you have an edge of seeing the tote board action.
Golden Horizon - Looks best among those with race experience; Garret Gomez takes over for the money shot.
Long Shot - Lending Freeze
Best Bet - Elegant (race 5)
Santa Anita Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/3/$14.60; Long Shots, 8/1/$6.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 359/94/$596.20; Long Shots, 10/25/$248.40; Best Bets, 22/10/$44.80
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #4 Major Pleasure (6/1) in race 4 at Philadelphia Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Guanahani ran third at Tampa Bay paying $3.20 to show. Stats - 22/15/$95.00
