February 6, 2009 - 10:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds
Threat - Big class dropper from Rafael Becerra; she ran OK in last, her race two back, if repeated, would crush these.
Lucky Striker - Consistent sort is 8-for-8 in the money lifetime; she has never run a poor race and never been claimed either.
Long Shot - Blame the Wine
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Silent Stalk - The only filly with experience facing 7 FTS; her last race was OK, her first two races were much better.
Gumption - Bruce Headley rarely wins with FTS, but this one is bred to win early; has shown speed in the a.m. too.
Long Shot - Heartless Vixen
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $46,000, Maiden special weights, 4-year-olds and up
Eagle Strike - Stretches out around 2-turns for the first time, and on grass no less; key is the return of Garrett Gomez.
B's Lucky Strike - Has lost three straight photo finishes in grass routes; he is overdue for some racing luck.
Long Shot - Deacon's Cat
Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $42,000, Claiming $50,000, 4-year-olds and up
Gregorian Bay - Big class drop to face the softest test of his career; reunited with main man Rafael Bejarano.
Marenostrum - Speedball will try to take these wire to wire; his only fear is if Kalookan Event hounds him early.
Long Shot - Soul City Slew
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Storm the Church - Ran fine in debut for Jeff Mullins; switches to Garrett Gomez for the money shot, will be overbet.
Gabby's Golden Gal - Was 4/5 chalk in debut which showed how she was working in the a.m.; switches to the Bob Baffert barn.
Long Shot - Well Monied
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $32,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds
Wink At the Girls - He runs first time for a price tag since his maiden days; reunited with Gerry Olguin, sleeper pick.
Rhetorically - Drops to the lowest class level of his life; key for me is Garrett Gomez picks up the reins.
Long Shot - High Stakes Silver
Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Flashover - Was badly overmatched in the Sunshine Millions; returns to SoCal and Barry Abrams hires Garrett Gomez.
Witchy Meeting - Been away 10-months, but showed some talent back when; Rafael Bejarano will sit a trip and fire late.
Long Shot - Summertime
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
J B Wine - Tiny edge in a difficult looking race; the key, once again, is Garrett Gomez does make a big difference.
Cracked Code - Split the field in debut and got some needed experience; if he improves a step, he's right there.
Long Shot - Dolrdolrbillyall
Best Bet - Threat (race 1)
