HORSE RACING
August 14, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Maiden claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Holladay Dixie - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; like the turn back in distance for this.
Sleepin In - Speedball is another dropping from MSW to maiden claiming; 5-YO mare has thrice given up the lead in deep stretch.
Long Shot - Cool Haleigh
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Street Match - No shame finishing third to Model in last; Model ran huge to finish second in a stakes, rail skimming trip.
Wickednwackyingrid - Speedball sprinter stretching out is sure to garner an easy lead; we'll see how far she can go.
Long Shot - Vanguarda
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Wild Fleece - Was grinding well late last time; her two turf races are both pretty good, tactical speed to sit a nice trip.
Shes a Real Keeper - Tepid chalk in a race where Alex Solis may have moved too soon; he'll need to save some ground somehow.
Long Shot - Powerofvoodoo
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Concettina - Was too fresh, keen in return and used up her energy prematurely; Mullins takes the blinkers off, stalking trip.
Cupid's Kitty - Good run last time while facing better; she'll save ground and drop in class to where she last won a race.
Long Shot - Minnow
Race 5 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $42,000, Maiden claiming $100,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
Kalapana - Was running well late, which is the way a lot of Jeff Mullins babies debut; then they typically improve with racing.
Sorry Baby - Hard to believe that Bob Baffert barn has been nearly irrelevant at Del Mar; filly put in a good run last time.
Long Shot - Lanie's Way
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Winning Tactics - Still don't believe he lost last time; been training OK since, a repeat race is enough to beat these.
Wilmore - Bill Morey NoCal shipper won for this price tag two races ago; perfect fit for class level and running style.
Long Shot - Forestry's Fire
Race 7 - 5 furlongs (turf), Purse $61,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
Simply Run - She wanted no part of a 2-turn route in the Claiming Crown; returns to her comfort zone, should be firing late.
Whatsitgonnatake - Was all out to win off the claim for Mike Mitchell; she could repeat but figures to be way overbet.
Long Shot - Queen Ofthe Catsle
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 2-year-olds
It's in the Fridge - Ran super in debut, losing to a very well meant Delaware Doe; note that Bejarano takes the call for Miller.
Cach D Fish - Tough debut trip made everyone's horses to watch list; cozy outside post will allow him to clock the early speed.
Long Shot - Seven Lucky J's
Best Bet - Winning Tactics (race 6)
Del Mar Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$31.60; Long Shots, 7/1/$7.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 400/97/$681.20; Long Shots, 208/29/$346.00; Best Bets, 25/7/$32.60
