HORSE RACING
April 7, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Perfect Honey - Started poorly, ran evenly in last; her race two back is fast enough to win, the FTS don't look like much.
Vicki's Mandate - Speedball effort was pretty good in a well bet debut; she makes sense in what could be a no passing zone race.
Long Shot - Sam's Queen
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Ata Honour - Was overmatched facing $100k foes in last; did not disgrace herself and could boss these from the get go.
Dixie Jo - Decent career debut and could improve with the addition of blinkers on; FTS at this low level are problematic.
Long Shot - Dreams Afleet
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $55,000, Claiming $80,000, 4-year-olds and up
Worchester - Strong Bobby Frankel entry has two horses that can close pretty well; Solis opted for New Export, I like this guy.
Wild Buddy - Ran like he needed the race last time, his first in one year; rail post at one mile is a nice advantage.
Long Shot - Billy Allen
Race 4 - 7 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Maiden special weights, 4-year-olds and up
Just Julian - Came back a short horse off a 3-month hiatus; suspect Richard Mandella has tightened the screws for this.
Waveland Avenue - Might have been too close to the pace last time; he's the best closer in the field so watch for him late.
Long Shot - Camel Point
Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $18,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
Plan For Fun - Won right off the claim by Jeff Mullins, spotted perfectly to repeat; saves ground, will grind it out late.
Mananan McLir - Interesting that Mike Mitchell dropped him to win, but no claim tags as yet; proved he belongs with these.
Long Shot - Tolnai
Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Lutyens - Been away 5-months, but has run races fast enough to beat these; 7-YO maiden has run only nine races in his life.
High Investment - Big rider switch to Corey Nakatani for the money shot; his race two back is fast enough to compete in here.
Long Shot - Scotty Jones
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Nottingham Forest - Could sit a perfect trip if Heathersdaddysbaby and Cee Stone duel; Hollendorfer has really improved her.
Cee Stone - Another who has improved a lot off the claim, this by Mike Machowsky; has won before by rating off the pace.
Long Shot - Heathersdaddysbaby
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
Okie Dokie Petey - Claimed by Sadler and wheeled back quickly, a positive sign; like that Rafael Bejarano rides this cheapie.
Mass Appeal - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; doesn't hurt coming from Jeff Mullins barn.
Long Shot - Pack Your Bags
Best Bet - Just Julian (race 4)
Santa Anita Sunday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/4/$18.40; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.20
Santa Anita Totals - 1,141/273/$2,039.90; Long Shots, 562/71/$900.40; Best Bets, 64/22/$97.00
