HORSE RACING
March 20, 2008 - 9:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 2 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
I Catherine - As sure as the sun sets in the west, Martin Pedroza is on the live babies in these debut drag races.
Dulce Maria - Wesley Ward has two in here, respect them both; Tyler Baze rides this one, keep an eye on the longer price too.
Long Shot - Chilliwack
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $41,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
Gallardo - Logical chalk won last time in easier fashion that it looked; Gomez takes over for the injured Rafael Bejarano.
Scrummage - Chance to be lone speed, though that still may not be enough to win; slumping Joe Talamo needs to snap out of it.
Long Shot - Sacred Light
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $57,000, Allowance, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Gambler's Justice - With the turf rail out 24 feet, speed helps; Spawr filly is a sprinter stretching out, the Mig will send.
Miss Fremont - I think the favorite is phony so I'll try to be her with this class dropper; good try in the China Doll.
Long Shot - Yasinisi
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Abbey Cat - One of many with some back class, her recent races at least appear to be OK; will be grinding from the outside.
Pirate's Charm - In a race this awful, many times it's better to take the early lead and play catch me if you can.
Long Shot - Comparacion
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
June My Love - At least she shows some modicum of consistency on turf; tactical speed helps with the turf rail out 24 feet.
Flamingo Princess - Sprinter stretching out should show speed to protect her rail post; Gomez will depress her price.
Long Shot - Dolly Varten
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $28,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds
Remember Boffi - Big class drop points to him as the horse to beat; most of his recent races are fast enough to win here.
Quityerbellyaching - With Bejarano injured, many of his pick-up mounts figure to be live; more value with Joel Rosario.
Long Shot - Scott's Poppy
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Spinning Yarns - I think speed has a chance to dominate the turf races; Joel Rosario would best be advised to send hard.
Yogi'ssplashofgold - Horrible effort as a beaten favorite in last; most will give up on her, forgiving handicappers won't.
Long Shot - Tropical Bid
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
Mr. Logan - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; should be dead fit exiting turf races.
El Vic - Suspect will be overlooked with low percentage connections and a parking lot post; speed to clear most of the field.
Long Shot - Mas Hombre
Best Bet - Gallardo (race 2)
Santa Anita Monday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$65.00; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 905/213/$1,577.40; Long Shots, 446/57/$707.70; Best Bets, 50/16/$67.40
