HORSE RACING
January 31, 2008 - 10:00 pm
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $33,000, Maiden claiming $75,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
Lucky Mama - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; her two earlier races can upset these.
E Bradley - Tepid chalk was bet and ran OK in her career debut; of she improves a step off her debut, she's right there.
Long Shot - Homemade Brew
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds
Angel Eyed - Dead late closer could repeat her last race and run over the top of them; Gomez won't move too soon either.
Gold Chant - Speedball has a good chance to steal this on the front end; on paper she could be the lone speed in here.
Long Shot - Kimmy'sklassylady
Race 3 - 1 mile, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
My Weekend Squeeze - Jon Court had a choice of mounts and ended up on this filly; she ran a much improved race last time.
Star's Promise - Gomez can save all the ground inside and looke for a seam turning for home; offers little value at 3/1.
Long Shot - Mahalo Lani
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Lucky Stab - Dead late closer gets a big rider switch to Flores for the money shot; another taking a big class drop.
La Swing - Takes a triple drop in class to face an ordinary group; Gary Stute barn has been white hot, short price today.
Long Shot - Bold Cleo
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
Bear Mountain - The less races the better at this bottom level claimer; Warren firster found his best stride too late.
Prize of the City - For the forgiving handicappers in the audience; he should be able to get the lead, see how far he goes.
Long Shot - Sea Gull Sez
Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
Paul's Hope - Claimed by Mitchell, which is enough for me to upgrade his chances significantly; tactical speed to sit a trip.
Hurry Up Austin - Logical chalk exiting two graded stakes for this; my fear is this, he absolute hates to win races.
Long Shot - Cherokee Tear
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $57,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
Shore Do - Frankel takes a step back and runs him on grass, the only surface he's won over; starting over from square one.
Rhetorically - Hard knocking MSW win, albeit over an average group; his calling may be on turf as he is a son of Cozzene.
Long Shot - Grasberg
Race 8 - 7 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $32,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
Tribal Chief - Like the post position shift from extreme inside to parking lot outside; Campos won't have to rush to win.
Trail Mix - Speedball has earned this promotion off three straight victories; she may find the final furlong the hardest.
Long Shot - Characteristic
Race 9 - 1 mile, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
Processor's Turf - Was carried wide last time and still almost won; Gomez remains loyal and he'll carve a cleaner trip.
Sangaree - He has disappointed a lot of people, including me twice; maybe going around 2-turns will bring out his best.
Long Shot - Street Royale
Best Bet - Processor's Turf (race 9)
Santa Anita Saturday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/9/$60.00; Long Shots, 10/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60
Santa Anita Totals - 323/79/$571.00; Long Shots, 165/24/$290.20; Best Bets, 19/9/$37.60
