HORSE RACING

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

North Rodeo - She is in the softest spot of her life and figures to graduate; the only filly that can beat her is herself.

Teacher's Rule - This is not a class rise, she faced open claiming company, now is in with state-breds;

Long Shot - Unusually Hot

Race 2 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $39,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Pindaric - Gets class relief after facing much tougher fields in her last three starts; patient ground saving ride by Talamo.

Gold On Gossamer - Draw a line thru her last race where she didn't get a fair chance; small field offers more opportunity.

Long Shot - Karlee's Kitten

Race 3 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $18,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Jen's New Chapter - Hines filly continues sliding down the claiming ladder; she reaches a new low level facing a slow group.

Centorbi - Third start off a 3-month hiatus; she has the speed to dictate the pace in what could be a no passing zone race.

Long Shot - Nicole's Image

Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $12,000, Claiming $10,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

Hemet Thought - One good start, one bad start, off the claim by Sherman; dead late closer will see enough cheap early speed.

Dark Past - Dead fit off a couple Fairplex starts, he ran a very sharp race two back; the Mig has become Spawr's main man.

Long Shot - Trail Mix

Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds

Warren's Ruler - Like the rider switch to the more aggressive Nakatani for the money shot; tactical speed to sit a trip.

Asteri - Produced for Cerin first out off the claim; has a ton of back class where he should be able to repeat himself.

Long Shot - Holy Lark

Race 6 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $50,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up

Niagara Causeway - Makes his first SoCal start since breaking his MSW two winters ago; Talamo appears to have lost momentum.

Quasimodo - Disappointing Canani turfer facing the ignominy of running for a claiming price; somebody might just grab him.

Long Shot - Caribbean

Race 7 - 7 furlongs, Purse $55,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

Rush With Thunder - Was the claim of the Del Mar meet, showed he adored synthetic surfaces; like the turn back in distance.

Lucky J. H. - Switch from turf to dirt is not as drastic when the dirt is synthetic; suspect will run as a closing sprinter.

Long Shot - Bro Lo

Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Warren's Sillycat - Showed big improvement last time running for a price tag; if she improves another step, she can graduate.

Intimate Tales - Logical chalk due to Monteleone off the claim angle; another factor is top rider Espinoza taking the call.

Long Shot - Queen of the I.E.

Best Bet - North Rodeo (race 1)

Santa Anita Thursday- Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$21.00; Long Shots, 8/1/$27.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals - 118/25/$173.80; Long Shots, 60/7/$78.40; Best Bets, 7/2/$10.20
