Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Feb. 1
January 31, 2014 - 10:02 pm
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds and up
4 Dunmore East - Won first race off the claim by Robertino Diodoro; is dropped in class off the victory, likes SA too.
3 Senator Bob - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this bottom rung; may be better if used as a stalking, closing sprinter.
Long Shot - 2 Mensa Heat
Race 2 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $45,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
4 Fantastic Mizz - Been knocking on the door in 3 starts off the claim by Jack Carava; this is a simple lower class to boot.
3 Boller Bomb - Consistent sort runs well despite multiple trainer changes; shown a real aptitude for Arcadia sod.
Long Shot - 1 High Jinks
Race 3 - 1 mile, Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up
6 Hear the Ghost - I liked him in the Strub, I’ll like him in this confidence builder; he is clearly a stakes horse caliber.
1 Let’s Get Crackin - Good second in last off a 3-month hiatus; stretches out to a mile, can save every step of ground inside.
Long Shot - 4 Holy Candy
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $40,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
1 Burns Turn - Claimed by Peter Miller which usually is a good thing; will need to improve one step to handle this group.
4 Meltarib - Has run well on SA sod and has 2 seconds down the hillside course; figures to sit in arrears and make one brush.
Long Shot - 6 Blushing Martha
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
3 Appealing Resume - Claimed by Mike Pupye and spotted nicely to win; always helps to hire the main man, Rafael Bejarano.
5 Woebegon - Claimed by Mike Pender off a pair of gritty seconds; will see if he can improve mare one step to win.
Long Shot - 6 Vicki Victoria
Race 6 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $58,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up
6 Brother Pete - John Sadler has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; Rafael Bejarano had choices and opted for this colt.
3 Cervarao - This is the longer priced John Sadler horse; figures to sit in arrears and try one brush turning for home.
Long Shot - 5 Scorcher
Race 7 - 1 mile, $300,000 Las Virgenes, Fillies, 3-year-olds
8 Streaming - Is a perfect 2-for-2 exiting the grade 1 Hollywood Starlet; she has a high celing and is pointing for the KY Oaks.
7 Taste Like Candy - Fought hard with the chalk in the Hollywood Starlet; these 3-YO can improve a lot in a short period.
Long Shot - 3 Arethusa
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), $200,000 Arcadia, 4-year-olds and up
2 Vagabond Shoes - Last seen putting in a good effort in the BC Turf; turf races are often decided by who gets the clean trip.
9 Winning Prize - Has run well at the distance and is 6-of-8 wins on grass; first try in Arcadia, has a ton of back class.
Long Shot - 8 Suggestive Boy
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming 420,000, 4-year-olds and up
7 Profire - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; this is a very slow group of horses he’s facing.
8 Rob’s Pal - He took the plunge in class last time and ran second; the field is full of slowpokes so he’ll pass them late.
Long Shot - 4 Anzeau
Best Bet - 6 Hear the Ghost (race 3)
Santa Anita Park Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/5/$36.80; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals - 393/119/$740.80; Long Shots, 195/23/$248.60; Best Bets, 24/11/$49.00
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #8 Ire (9/2) in race 8 at Fair Grounds. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Conga Bella ran out at Aqueduct. Stats - 23/12/$89.50; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
