UNLV men's team takes sixth
in match-play tournament

The UNLV men's golf team fell short to Iowa in the fifth-place match Tuesday at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz.

UNLV's Derek Ersnt rolled to a 4-and-3 win over the Hawkeyes' Brad Hopfinger, and Jeremiah Wooding edged Brad George 2-and-1, but the Rebels lost the other three matches to wrap up the 16-team event.

New Mexico, the tournament's 15th seed, beat No. 8 seed Southern California in the first-place match.

Also: Vijay Singh withdrew from the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill because of a back injury. This is the second straight week the three-time major champion has had to pull out.

He was replaced in the 120-man field by Carl Pettersson, who tied for eighth last week at Innisbrook.

Singh has not won since the end of the 2008 season. He was coming off two strong finishes in Florida until the back problem. It was not clear if he planned to play next week in the Houston Open, where he is a past champion.

Both Klitschkos seek shot at
WBA heavyweight champ Haye

Both Klitschko brothers want to fight WBA heavyweight champion David Haye.

"The biggest rival -- or obstacle -- in this fight is my brother," Vitali Klitschko said of Wladimir. "We cannot decide who will fight Haye. I think we will have to flip a coin."

Vitali said the brothers are "very angry" with Haye after the British fighter showed up at a news conference last year wearing a T-shirt depicting himself standing in a ring over the Ukrainian brothers' bodies, holding their dismembered heads in the air.

"Haye is a man who does not choose his words," Vitali said. "He has always used bizarre ways to express his thoughts, whatever fight he performs in ... creating 'good' publicity."

Haye, a former world cruiserweight champion, will make the first defense of his WBA title against John Ruiz on April 3 in Manchester, England. He won the heavyweight crown from Russia's Nikolai Valuev in November in Germany.

Haye said his goal is to unify the titles by beating the Klitschko brothers, who have the WBC, IBF and WBO belts between them.

Virginia chiropractor arrested in Florida steroid investigation

A northern Virginia chiropractor was arrested on drug charges after a co-defendant accused him of supplying steroids to members of the NHL's Washington Capitals and baseball's Washington Nationals.

The Capitals acknowledged that some of their players had received "routine chiropractic services" from the suspect but denied that any players received steroids.

Douglas O. Nagel, 50, was arrested in McLean, Va., and charged by Florida authorities with seven counts of soliciting to deliver a controlled substance, specifically steroids.

The Polk County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office alleges that Nagel received regular shipments of steroids, including testosterone and nandrolone, from Richard Andrew Thomas of Lakeland, Fla. Thomas has since pleaded guilty in federal court to possessing steroids with intent to sell. He awaits sentencing.

The Nationals said in a statement that they "have absolutely no association with this doctor. And never have."

Also: A Northern California high school baseball player is clinging to life after a line drive hit his head during a practice game March 11. Gunnar Sandberg, 16, remained in critical condition at Marin General Hospital in Kentfield, Calif.

He is a student at Marin Catholic High School. Educators there say Sandberg was removed from a medically induced coma Friday and underwent a brain scan Monday because doctors didn't see progress.

Izzy DiMaria, who had managed Las Vegas High's American Legion baseball team since the early 1980s, died Monday of bone cancer and complications from pneumonia. He was 77.

DiMaria, who served on the Nevada Youth Baseball Association Board of Directors until his death, also coached Bishop Gorman's American Legion players when they teamed with Las Vegas in the early 1980s.

A viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Palm Mortuary and Cemetery Green Valley. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Viator Catholic Church.

Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott could miss the rest of the Premier League season because of a hamstring injury, which also could be another potential blow to England's World Cup roster. Lescott has missed 12 games this season after surgery to remove a piece of bone from his foot.

England already is missing midfielder David Beckham (torn Achilles' tendon). Left back Ashley Cole hopes to recover from a broken foot before England's opener against the U.S. on June 12.
