Baseball team rallies past Long Beach State

The UNLV baseball team scored both of its runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday to edge Long Beach State 2-1 at Wilson Stadium.

With one out in the ninth, Cash Thomas' RBI single made it 1-1, but R.J. Arnold was cut down at the plate trying to score from second. Jarred Frierson's grounder then was misplayed by Dirtbags second baseman T.J. Mittelstaedt, allowing Richie Jimenez to score the winning run.

Matt Hutchison went eight innings for UNLV (14-8), allowing one run on six hits and no walks, with six strikeouts. Brady Zuniga worked a scoreless ninth to get the win.

Also: The UNLV softball team beat DePaul 5-4 at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.

The Rebels (20-11) scored three runs in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead and then held off a rally by the Blue Demons (13-11).

Alyssia De La Torre had an RBI in each inning, on a squeeze bunt in the fourth and a single in the fifth.

The UNLV men's golf team won its first match at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz., but its second contest was suspended because of darkness.

The sixth-seeded Rebels beat 11th-seeded Middle Tennessee State 3½-1½, getting victories from Cody Smith, Eddie Olson and Jeremiah Wooding. The Rebels had lost one match and were trailing in three others in second-round play against third-seeded Texas A&M.

The event is to continue through Tuesday.

Ducks' Selanne notches 600th goal in victory

Teemu Selanne became the 18th member of the 600-goal club, scoring 34 seconds into the second period during a power play to help the host Anaheim Ducks beat the Colorado Avalanche, 5-2.

The only other European-born players in the 600-goal club are Finnish countryman Jari Kurri (601) and the Czech Republic's Jaromir Jagr (646). Selanne, 39, is the fourth player to reach the milestone in the past four seasons, joining Jagr, Brendan Shanahan and Joe Sakic.

Also: Calgary Flames center Daymond Langkow was hospitalized but was in good condition after being hit in the back of the neck with a puck during a 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul, Minn.

Jessica Wong scored late in the third overtime to lift Minnesota Duluth to a 3-2 victory over Cornell in the NCAA Women's Frozen Four championship game in Minneapolis.

Robert Ewing won the NASCAR All-American Series opener Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring by leading the last 44 laps of the Super Late Models race.

Dustin Ash led the first 56 laps before his engine failed, costing Ewing Brothers Racing a possible sweep of the top four spots. Ewing's Jeff Connor was second and Nick Halen third.

Other winners were: Vinny Raucci (Chargers), Jeremiah Wagner (Legends), Bob Dresser (Thunder Roadsters) and Pete Meyer (Bombers).

Houston basketball coach Tom Penders plans to resign, according to several Houston media sources.

Houston reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992 but lost to Maryland 89-77 in the first round of the Midwest Regional on Friday.

An animal welfare group wants New York City prosecutors to investigate Mike Tyson's reality TV show about pigeon racing.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says the Brooklyn-based show is cruel to animals and its races could involve illegal gambling.

The show will follow Tyson as he competes in pigeon races.

Kenya's Wesley Korir successfully defended his title at the Los Angeles Marathon, and Edna Kiplagat won the women's title.
