Warriors officially announce
plan to move to San Francisco

The Golden State Warriors, NBA commissioner David Stern and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee officially announced Tuesday that the Bay Area's only NBA team will try to move back to scenic San Francisco. The earliest the team could leave Oakland, Calif., would be 2017, when it can escape its lease at Oracle Arena.

"We can turn this dream into a goal by giving it urgency," said Warriors co-owner Peter Guber, the movie mogul and Mandalay Entertainment's chief executive. "We will play here in 2017. Take that as a promise that we will fulfill. There will be a world-class entertainment venue. We're all-in."

The still-in-the-works project has an estimated cost of $500 million.

Also: Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving of Cleveland was the lone unanimous choice to the NBA's All-Rookie team.

Irving (18.0 points per game, 5.0 assists) received 58 points in voting done by the league's 30 coaches, who could not vote for their own player. Joining him on the first team were: Minnesota's Ricky Rubio (49 points); Denver's Kenneth Faried (46); Golden State's Klay Thompson (43); and New York's Iman Shumpert, San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard and Detroit's Brandon Knight, who all had 40 points.

The New York Knicks and coach Mike Woodson are completing a multiyear deal that could be announced this week, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Woodson led the Knicks to an 18-6 record and a first-round playoff loss to Miami as interim coach after replacing Mike D'Antoni on March 14.

Six Rebel baseball players

Six UNLV baseball players earned All-Mountain West Conference honors, with first baseman Trent Cook, outfielder Brandon Bayardi and relief pitcher Zack Hartman making the first team.

Bayardi led the Rebels with a .359 average in conference play. Cook batted .327 and had 16 RBIs in MWC play, and Hartman was 2-0 with 27 strikeouts and five walks in 11 MWC appearances.

Shortstop Danny Higa, outfielder Joey Swanner and pitcher Erick Fedde made the second team.

Also: Former Palo Verde High School baseball player William Robert "Billy-Bob" Ward was arrested in Twin Falls, Idaho, last week on felony charges of selling anabolic steroids to several College of Southern Idaho teammates. A preliminary hearing is set for Friday.

Court records said Idaho State Police investigators used the roommate of one of Ward's teammates as a confidential informant to set up and monitor three purchases of anabolic steroids from Ward between February and mid-May. The purchases, totaling $2,900, took place on the CSI campus.

Ward, 21, had just completed his sophomore season at CSI. A third baseman for the Golden Eagles, he hit .292 with two home runs and 24 RBIs.

Yannick Hanfmann rallied late in the third set to beat Justin Shane in singles and help Southern California win its fourth straight NCAA men's tennis title with a 4-2 victory over Virginia in Athens, Ga.

Rain delayed the start of singles three hours before the match at the University of Georgia was moved indoors. Hanfmann clinched the Trojans' 20th national title with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) win.

Lauren Embree and Alex Cercone won their singles matches to help Florida take its second straight NCAA women's tennis title with a 4-0 victory over UCLA in Athens, Ga.

UCLA (26-3) was shut out by Florida (27-1) in the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year.

WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will defend his title Sept. 15 against former world champion Paul Williams at the MGM Grand Garden.

Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 knockouts) is coming off an impressive 12-round unanimous decision over Shane Mosley on May 5. Williams (41-2, 27 KOs) last fought in February, defeating Nobuhiro Ishida.

Also: Kim Clijsters said this year's U.S. Open will be her last tournament before retiring.

The former No. 1-ranked player had already announced that this would be her final season and said Tuesday that she expects to quit after Flushing Meadows, where she is a three-time champion.

Clijsters is skipping the entire clay-court season as she recovers from a hip injury, but hopes to be fit for Wimbledon and the London Olympics.

Clijsters, 28, initially retired in 2007 because of injuries but returned to the sport in 2009, winning her second U.S. Open that year.
