South Korean, 17, goes for U.S. Amateur record

Byeong-Hun An will face fourth-seeded Ben Martin today in his bid to become the youngest winner of the U.S. Amateur.

After being 1 down heading to the 13th hole, the 17-year-old South Korean won four straight holes to close out a 3-and-2 victory against Fresno State sophomore Bhavik Patel on Saturday in Tulsa, Okla.

Martin took a 4-up lead through six holes as Texas senior Charlie Holland got off to a sloppy start, and he cruised to a 5-and-4 victory.

An and Martin will meet in a 36-hole match play final at Southern Hills Country Club, the site of the 2007 PGA Championship.

Also: Rookie Anna Nordqvist's 3-under-par 69 moved her into a one-shot lead over Seon Hwa Lee and Ai Miyazato going into today's final round of the Safeway Classic in North Plains, Ore.

Nordqvist, who won the LPGA Championship this year, was at 10-under 134 after the first two rounds at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

Miyazato had three straight birdies on Nos. 8 through 10, all par-5 holes, to edge up the leaderboard with a 68.

Lee sank a birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole and finished with a 70.

Mark McNulty shot a 7-under 65 to share the lead heading into today's final round of the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie, Wash.

Loren Roberts had four birdies in his final six holes to match McNulty's 65 and finish at 11-under 133. They have a two-shot lead over Bernhard Langer and first-round leader Mark O'Meara.

Peter Hedblom of Sweden shot a 4-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Paul Lawrie after three rounds of the Johnnie Walker Championship in Gleneagles, Scotland.

The 39-year-old Hedblom was at 8-under 208. Lawrie (73) dropped into second place after bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16.

USC receiver Johnson breaks collarbone

Southern California receiver Ronald Johnson will be out six to eight weeks after breaking his collarbone during the No. 4 Trojans' mock game at the Coliseum in Los Angeles.

Johnson was the Trojans' third-leading receiver last season with 33 catches for 570 yards and eight touchdowns. The junior was expected to start for USC this season alongside Damian Williams.

Also: Alabama football coach Nick Saban signed a three-year contract extension, athletic director Mal Moore said.

Saban signed an eight-year contract when he joined the Crimson Tide in 2007. The extension takes him through 2017.

The extension is subject to approval by the compensation committee of the board of trustees of the University of Alabama System.

Several Michigan football players have told the Detroit Free Press that the program regularly violates NCAA rules limiting how much time they can spend on training and practice sessions.

Players from the 2008 and 2009 teams talked to the newspaper for a story published on its Web site. They spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity because they feared repercussions from coaches.

Coach Rich Rodriguez and the university's compliance director, Judy Van Horn, denied that the program was violating NCAA rules.

The UNLV volleyball team beat Valparaiso 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19) in the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.

Sara Nehf had her fifth career double-double for the Rebels (1-1), recording 11 kills and 12 digs.

Verdasco, Wozniacki claim Pilot Pen titles

Spain's Fernando Verdasco won the Pilot Pen tennis tournament in New Haven, Conn., beating American Sam Querrey 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the final tuneup for the U.S. Open.

The second-seeded Verdasco, 25, fought off four second-set points from the hard-serving Querrey, three of them in the tiebreaker, to win his first title of the season and third of his career.

Verdasco's win came after Caroline Wozniacki took her second consecutive women's title in New Haven.

The 19-year-old from Denmark beat Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-4 to win her sixth tournament title and third this year.

Also: A coroner's report completed months before a Lousiville, Ky., high school football coach was charged with reckless homicide in a player's death declared the death an accident, a defense attorney said.

Prosecutors provided the investigative report late Friday to defense attorneys for former Pleasure Ridge Park coach Jason Stinson. Defense attorneys said it's "inexcusable" they are just now getting a report completed a year ago.

Stinson is to stand trial Monday on charges of reckless homicide and wanton endangerment in the death of 15-year-old Max Gilpin.

David Laut, who won a bronze medal for the United States in the shot put at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, was shot to death after confronting intruders outside his Oxnard, Calif., home, authorities said. He was 52.

Laut was gunned down early Friday when he went outside to check on a noise in the yard, Oxnard Police Sgt. Ken Klopman said.

Matt Goerke became the sixth first-time winner in the 450cc Class at the penultimate round of the AMA Pro Motocross in Southwick, Mass.

Justin Barcia also got his first career victory, winning the 250 Class, and teammate Jessica Patterson won the WMX Class.
