Report: Colorado State tabs Alabama assistant as coach

Colorado State called a news conference for today to introduce its new football coach amid reports Monday that Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain will take the job.

McElwain would replace Steve Fairchild, who was fired last week by new athletic director Jack Graham after going 16-33 in four seasons with the Rams, including three straight 3-9 finishes.

McElwain, who's preparing for the national championship against Louisiana State in January, joined the Crimson Tide in 2008 after serving as an assistant at Fresno State, Michigan State, Louisville, Montana State and with the Oakland Raiders.

A Colorado State spokesman declined to confirm a report in the Denver Post that McElwain would be introduced as the Rams' coach, and nobody at Alabama was available to speak about the matter.

Also: Toledo hired offensive coordinator Matt Campbell to take over as its new coach.

It's the first head coaching job for Campbell, 32, who was named the school's interim football coach Friday after Tim Beckman announced he was leaving for Illinois.

Miami running back Lamar Miller will skip his final two seasons of college eligibility and enter the NFL Draft.

Miller ran for 1,272 yards as a redshirt sophomore this season, becoming the first Miami back to top the 1,000-yard mark since 2002.

Boston College linebacker Luke Kuechly won the Bronko Nagurski Award, given to the nation's top college defensive player. The 6-foot-3-inch, 235-pound Kuechly led the nation in total tackles with 191 and solo tackles with 102.

The other finalists were Louisiana State defensive back Morris Claiborne, Alabama defensive back Mark Barron, Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus and Penn State defensive tackle Devon Still.

Safety Troy Hawthorne of Centennial High in Peoria, Ariz., committed to play football for UNLV, according to Scout.com. Northern Arizona also offered the 6-3, 210-pound Hawthorne a scholarship.
