Texas' Augustin, four others declare for draft

Five players, including All-America point guard D.J. Augustin of Texas, announced Wednesday that they have declared for the NBA Draft.

Augustin, who averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 assists as a sophomore this past season, is expected to be a first-round pick. His backcourt partner, junior A.J. Abrams (16.5 points, 118 3-pointers), also declared.

Another Big 12 Conference player, junior guard Mario Chalmers of national champion Kansas, declared. Chalmers (12.8 points, 4.3 assists, 97 steals) hit one of the biggest shots in NCAA Tournament history, a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in the title game against Memphis that sent it into overtime.

Also declaring were two Memphis players -- junior guard Antonio Anderson (8.6 points) and junior forward Robert Dozier (9.2 points, 6.8 rebounds).

None of the five players has hired an agent, which gives them the option to change their minds before the June 26 draft.

Also: Xavier coach Sean Miller has agreed to a 10-year contract extension. Miller, 39, led the Musketeers to a 30-7 record and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance last season.

Derek Kellogg, who played on four Atlantic 10 championship teams at Massachusetts in the 1990s, was formally introduced as his alma mater's coach. The 34-year-old will receive a six-year contract, but terms have not been finalized.

New Jersey Nets guard Vince Carter had surgery to remove a bone spur from his right ankle. He will be on crutches for several weeks, followed by rehabilitation, and is expected to be ready for training camp.

Darell Garretson, a longtime NBA referee who also directed the league's officiating staff, died Monday at his Mesa, Ariz., home at age 76. His health had been in decline following surgery and various illnesses, the National Basketball Referees Association said.
