Tizway blazes to victory
in Metropolitan Handicap

Tizway had it all his way Monday in winning the $500,000 Metropolitan Handicap, running the second-fastest mile in the storied history of the race.

The 6-year-old son of Tiznow left his 10 rivals in the dust once he made the turn for home and scorched the mile in 1 minute, 32.90 seconds at Belmont Park in New York -- just nine-hundredths of a second off the record of 1:32.81 set by Honour and Glory in 1996.

A year ago, Tizway finished third in the Metropolitan behind Quality Road, who won in a speedy 1:33.11. Tizway missed five months after last year's race with a left front foot injury.

Also: Dubawi Heights wore down leader Celtic Princess in the final strides to win the $250,000 Gamely Stakes at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif.

Dubawi Heights, a 4-year-old Britain-bred filly making her Grade 1 stakes debut, ran 1 1/8 miles on the turf in 1:47.29.

COLLEGES

Virginia tops Maryland
in men's lacrosse final

Colin Briggs scored five goals to lead seventh-seeded Virginia over Maryland 9-7 in the NCAA men's lacrosse championship in Baltimore.

Briggs, who did not play in Saturday's semifinals after being suspended due to a violation of team rules, scored three times on uncontested shots and twice beat defenders 1-on-1.

Also: Southern California's Steve Johnson beat Tennessee's Rhyne Williams 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to win the NCAA men's tennis singles title at Stanford, Calif.

California's Jana Juricova beat Stanford's Stacey Tan 6-0, 7-6 (2), to win the women's title.

Virginia was selected as the top overall seed for the 64-team NCAA Division I baseball tournament. The Cavaliers (49-9) won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament and will host one of 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals that begin Friday.

The other national seeds, in order, are: Florida (45-16), North Carolina (45-14), South Carolina (45-14), Florida State (42-17), Vanderbilt (47-10), Texas (43-15) and Rice (41-19). Those teams will not face each other until the College World Series, if they make it there.

South Carolina made official what football coach Steve Spurrier hinted at all spring -- suspended quarterback Stephen Garcia will return to the Gamecocks on a probationary basis.

Garcia was suspended for the fifth time in his college career -- and second time during spring practice -- on April 6 after an incident at a life skills seminar where he "exhibited behavior that is unacceptable for one of our student-athletes," athletic director Eric Hyman said.
