Menzies drives to win
in SCORE Laughlin event

Las Vegan Bryce Menzies won the overall title in the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge race at the Laughlin Events Center to record his first series title.

Menzies, 23, overcame a four-second deficit to reigning SCORE Trophy-Truck and overall series champion Jesse Jones, who took the lead in racing Saturday on the 6.25-mile course.

Menzies gained an early lead over Jones on the first lap Sunday. They ran nearly identical lap times until Jones' truck developed a minor engine problem over the last two laps that allowed Menzies to win by 59 seconds with his two-day combined time for eight total laps.

"The plan was just to cruise the first five laps, and Jesse was right on me," Menzies said. "We decided the last two laps that we were going to take it and run with it."

Also: Australian Matthew Goss won the criterium prelude to the Tour Down Under cycling race in Adelaide, Australia, and Lance Armstrong started his last professional event outside the United States by finishing 68th.

Goss edged compatriot and teammate Mark Renshaw at the finish, and Robbie McEwen of Armstrong's Team RadioShack rallied for third after being stopped by a crash 500 meters from the finish.

Armstrong, who doesn't relish the hazardous, wheel-to-wheel racing in criteriums, mostly stayed in the middle and avoided the crash. Henderson was not hurt.

Josh Cox won the Arizona Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, then kept on running to smash his American record for 50 kilometers by 3½ minutes, missing the world mark by just seven seconds.

Cox, winner of the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon last month, completed the 31.2 miles in 2 hours, 43 minutes, 45 seconds after finishing the marathon in 2:17:32 to beat Solomon Kandie of Kenya by 1:08.

A charter bus carrying Kentucky basketball fans to the Wildcats' home game against Louisiana State caught fire, but officials said no one was injured.

The bus, traveling from Paducah to Lexington, Ky., caught fire Saturday morning on the Western Kentucky Parkway. The driver saw smoke coming from a rear wheel, pulled over and got all 65 passengers off safely.

By the time firefighters arrived, more than half the bus was engulfed in flames.

Manchester United held on after Rafael da Silva's dismissal to secure a scrappy 0-0 draw at Tottenham, staying unbeaten and in first place in the English Premier League, ahead of Manchester City.
