Portis' charismatic, contentious
run with Redskins comes to end

"Southeast Jerome" is officially gone for good. As well as "Dolla Bill" and "Sheriff Gonna Getcha."

Clinton Portis was released by the Washington Redskins on Monday, ending a charismatic and sometimes contentious seven-year stay that, for a while at least, made him the face of the franchise.

Injuries and money led to coach Mike Shanahan's decision. Portis had played in only 13 games over the last two seasons because of a severe concussion in 2009 and a torn groin muscle in 2010.

Portis was scheduled to make $8.3 million next season, and Shanahan made it clear at the NFL combine that the Redskins wouldn't keep the 29-year-old running back at that price.

"We're going to let him test the market," Shanahan said, "and see what's out there for him."

Portis told 106.7 The Fan that he was given a chance to restructure his contract, but he said it would be "hard to accept not being the go-guy."

"It was kind of a mutual decision," Portis said. "They could have sat and held on and played around. They gave me an opportunity to further my career and go somewhere where I can help."

Portis will be most remembered for his colorfully productive 2005 season, when he set a franchise single-season rushing record (1,516 yards) and led the team to its first playoff berth in six years while playing dress-up along the way. Every Thursday during the season's homestretch he would appear in costume, playing a wide range of characters that also included "Bro Sweets" and "Inspector Two-Two."

Also: The Chicago Bears released veteran defensive tackle Tommie Harris, cutting loose a three-time Pro Bowl pick who had struggled in recent years because of injuries.

The Bears also released linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer and offensive tackle Kevin Shaffer.

A Pro Bowl pick from 2005 to 2007, Harris was limited by knee and hamstring problems the past few years. He had signed a four-year, $40 million extension in June 2008 and was locked in through 2012, but the Bears decided to cut him after several ineffective seasons.

Jets offensive lineman Damien Woody said he has been cut by New York.

Woody said on his Twitter account that he had just been informed of his release and thanked the Jets and their fans.

Woody just finished his third season with the Jets and his 12th in the NFL. He had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in December.

Kamerion Wimbley will sign his franchise tag with the Oakland Raiders after the linebacker was unable to reach a long-term agreement with the team.

Agent Joe Linta said Wimbley will sign the tag that will guarantee him $11.312 million next season. Linta said the two sides will continue to talk about a long-term deal after the NFL's labor dispute is resolved.

The Seattle Seahawks re-signed reserve cornerback Kennard Cox for the 2011 season.

Cox appeared in 11 games last season for the Seahawks. He finished the year with seven total tackles on defense and another three on special teams. Cox also had Seattle's first blocked punt in seven seasons. It was recovered for a touchdown against Kansas City.

A Dallas judge has given fans who found they had no seats at the Super Bowl more time to consider the NFL's offers of compensation.

U.S. District Judge Barbara M.G. Lynn ruled that the NFL should provide a "limited" time extension for displaced fans to consider their options and receive additional information.

The ruling came after a hearing in a class action lawsuit stemming from the seating fiasco at Cowboys Stadium. Temporary seats were deemed unsafe on game day, requiring 400 fans to stand throughout the stadium.

Plaintiffs' attorney Michael Avenatti said the fans now have 60 days to evaluate their choices.

Running back Ahman Green said he has agreed to play in the Canadian Football League next season for the defending Grey Cup champion Montreal Alouettes.

Green, 34, is the Green Bay Packers' all-time leading rusher. He played last season for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.

A senior writer for ESPN pleaded not guilty to charges he assaulted his wife and resisted arrest during a disturbance in Buckland, Mass.
