Serena Williams 'likely out'
for remainder of 2010 season

Serena Williams might miss the rest of the 2010 season because her injured right foot hasn't healed properly.

"I am likely out for the year now," Williams said Sunday in a posting on her official website.

Williams said she "re-strained" her foot by overtraining.

Williams' agent, Jill Smoller, confirmed the posting was from the 13-time Grand Slam champion and said she will be re-evaluated in the coming days.

If Williams is sidelined for the remainder of the season, it would be a blow to the WTA Championships later this month, as well as for the United States when it plays Italy in the Fed Cup final next month in San Diego.

Last week, Williams' older sister Venus said she will miss the rest of the 2010 season because of an injured left knee. Both Williams siblings had said in August they would make themselves available for the U.S. Fed Cup team in the final.

Also: Top-ranked Rafael Nadal overpowered fifth-seeded Gael Monfils 6-1, 7-5 in Tokyo to win his first Japan Open title and rebound from a surprise semifinal loss in Bangkok last week.

Top-seeded Novak Djokovic beat David Ferrer of Spain 6-2, 6-4 on today to defend his China Open title.

No. 8 seed Ferrer sought to step up his game in the second set of the match, which was rained out Sunday, but Djokovic proved too much. The Serbian converted four of six break points while being broken only once.

Pleasant Prince storms late
to claim Oklahoma Derby

Favored Pleasant Prince took the lead in the stretch and pulled away for a win in the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in Oklahoma City.

Pleasant Prince, ridden by top California jockey Joel Rosario, stayed back in the nine-horse field before making a move on the turn, then passing horses in the stretch to beat long shot Timely Pursuit by four lengths. Stachys finished third, another 2¼ lengths back.

Pleasant Prince covered the 1 1/8 miles on a fast track in 1 minute, 48.81 seconds and will likely next run in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Long shot Acoma closed out her 18-race career with a victory in the Grade I $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

It was the first Grade I victory for the Empire Maker mare and trainer David Carroll. Ridden by Alan Garcia, she finished the 1 1/8-mile race over the fast polytrack in 1:48.77, a half-length in front of Milwaukee Appeal.

Kenyan, Russian runners repeat
victories at Chicago Marathon

Kenya's Sammy Wanjiru sprinted to a thrilling win, pulling away from Ethiopian Tsegay Kebede near the end to capture his second straight Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 24 seconds on a warm morning.

Liliya Shobukhova of Russia also repeated, quickly erasing a 24-second deficit late in the women's race and giving the event a pair of back-to-back winners for the first time in its 33 years.

The win assured Wanjiru of the World Marathon Majors series championship and the $500,000 that goes with it -- something Shobukhova locked up after a personal-best 2:20:25. Both took $75,000 for finishing first and an additional $40,000 in performance bonuses.

Also: The UNLV men's soccer team had a 16-6 edge in shots but had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Denver in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Johann Memorial Field.

The Rebels (4-6-1, 1-1-1 MPSF) held Denver to just one shot on goal, which Simon Cook saved to post his second straight shutout.

Atlanta Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec was released from the hospital, but there's still no explanation for why he collapsed in the season opener Friday night against Washington.

The team announced via Twitter that Pavelec was released after being hospitalized for two nights. The 23-year-old Pavelec sustained a concussion from hitting his head on the ice, but all tests to determine what caused him to initially collapse came back normal.

Brazil claimed its third consecutive men's volleyball world title with a sweep of Cuba, winning 25-22, 25-14, 25-22 in Rome.
