Incline downs Lynx to win 2A boys title

RENO -- Not even Dantley Walker could save Lincoln County on Saturday night.

The junior guard had 41 points, but Incline defeated the Lynx 71-64 at Lawlor Events Center for the Class 2A boys basketball state title.

Joshua Dykstra scored 19 points and Micha Corneil had 18 for Incline (26-3), which won its first boys state championship since 1990 and the fourth in school history.

"They're just a really solid team," Lincoln County coach Mike Wood said. "They can all shoot, they can all handle. They did a great job."

Walker scored 40 or more points for the second straight game, but after hitting seven 3-pointers in a semifinal win over Rite of Passage on Friday, Walker made just 2 of 14 3-point attempts.

Eric Rippetoe added 17 points for the Lynx (25-5).

Rippetoe hit a 3-pointer with 6:17 to play to make it 58-47, but Corneil answered, hitting a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 14.

Walker set a tournament record with 84 points in two games despite usually facing multiple defenders. The old Class 2A tournament record was 68, set by Virgin Valley's Danny Brotherson in three games in 1995.

"Dantley's got two or three guys on him every game," Wood said. "He's an incredible ballplayer. And he does that with two guys on him every night."

3A BOYS

■ Sparks 53, Lowry 50 -- The Railroaders needed overtime in the Class 3A final to win their first boys basketball title since 1940.

Angel Guillen's driving basket with 24 seconds to play in regulation allowed Sparks (20-8) to force overtime, and it started the extra period on a 6-2 run to take a 50-46 lead.

After a basket by the Buckaroos (15-12), Bryan Orellana hit a free throw and Andrew Garcia added two more to seal the win.

Guillen finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Danny Westfall led Lowry with 14 points.

3A GIRLS

■ Lowry 35, Spring Creek 34 -- Baskets by Julia Dufurrena and Skylar Estes seconds apart in the final minute of overtime lifted the Buckaroos (19-7) to their first state title since 2002.

Dufurrena led Lowry with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Spartans (22-4) missed a 6-footer at the buzzer that would have allowed them to claim their fourth title in five years.

Stacey Kerr led Spring Creek with 12 points.

2A GIRLS

■ Battle Mountain 52, Pershing County 49 -- Jordan Waugh poured in 26 points for the Miners (19-7), who rallied from a 29-19 halftime deficit to claim their fourth state title in seven years.

Abra Snow added 12 points for Battle Mountain, which limited Pershing County to 6-of-25 shooting in the second half.

Kendra Mitchell paced the Mustangs (27-3) with 12 points, and teammate Michelle Montes scored 10.

1A GIRLS

■ Virginia City 49, McDermitt 28 -- Gigi Glogovac scored 18 points and the Muckers held the Bulldogs to 11-of-43 shooting to win their first girls basketball state title.

Jill Dupre added 14 points and Taylor Parsons scored 11 for Virginia City, which expanded its 15-5 first-quarter lead to 27-13 at the half and 43-17 after three quarters.

Becky Hershner had six points and 12 rebounds for McDermitt.
