Las Vegan to be inducted into wrestling hall of fame

Jerry Wager of Las Vegas will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in the Outstanding Official category tonight in Stillwater, Okla.

Wager, 71, officiated in more than 50 international meets. He also worked as a youth wrestling coach in Southern Nevada.

Wager was a Mid-American Conference champion while attending Toledo and participated in the 1956 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling.

He coached the Las Vegas YMCA program from 1970 to 1980 after serving as head official for the Southern Nevada high school program from 1963 to 1966.

Wager was the first to receive the Amateur Athletic Union's Mort Geller award for international officials in 1973. His wife, Sheila, received the award nine years later.

Additionally, tickets are on sale for the June 13 to 15 U.S. Olympic team trials for wrestling and judo at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The event will feature men's and women's judo, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling for men and women.
