Mathews’ three RBIs power 51s to victory vs. River Cats

Aaron Mathews singled, doubled and drove in three runs as the 51s salvaged the final game of a four-game Pacific Coast League series with a 6-4 victory over the Sacramento River Cats on Monday in West Sacramento, Calif.
Mathews singled home Jonathan Diaz with the 51s' second run in a two-run third inning, then doubled with two outs in the fifth to drive in Angel Sanchez and Buck Coats, staking Las Vegas to a 5-1 lead.
Kyle Phillips added an RBI double in the sixth inning to put the 51s ahead 6-1 before Sacramento scored once in the bottom of the inning and added two runs in the ninth.
Starter Brian Burres (3-4) gave up seven hits over six innings to pick up the victory for Las Vegas (20-31). He struck out seven while walking one.
Donald Simmons (2-3) took the loss for Pacific South Division-leading Sacramento (32-19).

SERIES NOTES: The 51s beat Sacramento 6-4 on Monday to avert a four-game sweep and have lost six of their last eight. Las Vegas also will face the Tacoma Rainiers, Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, Saturday through June 9 at Cashman Field, where the 51s are 12-12. ... The Beavers feature three of the Padres’ top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America. First baseman Kyle Blanks is No. 1, outfielder Will Venable is No. 7, and infielder Matt Antonelli is No. 9.
