Former UFC champ Jones avoids ticket in New Mexico — AUDIO

When prosecutors in New Mexico decided not to charge former Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champ with a probation violation after he was cited in a traffic stop last month, it appeared he had caught a huge break.

Now that TMZ Sports has acquired audio, below, of the interaction between Jones and police officers, that opinion appears to have validity.

Jones was pulled over on Jan. 31 for going 75 miles per hour, 40 over the posted speed limit. He didn't have a license, registration or proof of insurance, explaining to the officer

While Jones was polite and compliant with the officer, he says he had lost the wallet that contained his license and didn't realize it was illegal to drive without the proper documentation, which he says he had left in his backpack as he rushed to the gym for a training session.

The officer gives Jones, who is on probation after a hit-and-run accident last year that led to his UFC belt being stripped, a warning for the speeding and cited him only for the lack of documentation.

"You're getting a huge break, dude," the officer says on the video. "Just drive normal, okay. You've got a cool car but there's no need to go drive crazy and kill somebody or kill yourself. It ain't worth it, dude."

Jones was sentenced to an additional three days of community service for not reporting the traffic stop to his probation officer in a timely manner.

He is scheduled to fight champion Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight title at UFC 197 on April 23 at MGM Grand.
