Fuller, back from Abu Dhabi, rejoins NHRA circuit

Rod Fuller has returned from the United Arab Emirates to compete in this weekend's Fram NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

The longtime Las Vegas resident will drive a Top Fuel Dragster owned by Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management and managed by Don Schumacher Racing.

Fuller moved to Abu Dhabi this year to live part time and work for the Yas Marina Circuit racing complex as a drag racing ambassador and instructor.

"People in both countries share a love of cars, of speed and of drag racing," he said. "Now I get to compete against my old rivals and at the same time help to promote Abu Dhabi."

Fuller, who won the 2007 Top Fuel Shootout at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, will compete at four NHRA Full Throttle Series events before returning to Abu Dhabi after the U.S. Nationals from Sept. 1 to 6 in Clermont, Ind.

■ JOHNSON, DAVIS AT IRWINDALE -- Justin Johnson of Las Vegas won his sixth feature of the season Saturday to extend his lead in the NASCAR Super Late Models standings at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif.

Johnson leads Vision Racing teammate Dusty Davis by 34 points after 12 races. Davis has two feature wins.

Two weeks ago, Davis finished eighth in a regional NASCAR K&N Pro Series West stock-car race at Irwindale and was followed by Southern Nevadans Taylor Barton in 12th and Johnson in 24th in the 30-car event. It was won by Auggie Vidovich of Lakeside, Calif.

■ SUPERCROSS RACE CANCELED -- A new international Supercross race planned for Oct. 16 at Sam Boyd Stadium has been canceled. No explanation was given.

The single-night event was to be promoted by Feld Entertainment, which also owns the AMA Supercross Series.

The event was to fill a slot vacated by the loss of Feld's U.S. Open for Supercross at the MGM Grand. The Open had been held annually in Las Vegas since 1998 but will not return this year.
