Kyle Busch back for ‘Night of Fire’

NASCAR star Kyle Busch will be the featured competitor Tuesday night during this year's biggest event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring.

The Durango High graduate will return to his roots and the track where he first gained notoriety to compete in the 75-lap Super Late Models stock-car race during the "Night of Fire" on the eve of the Fourth of July.

The regular NASCAR All-American Series card, which includes IMCA Modifieds and Legends Cars, will be joined by the Ford Focus Midget Series and performances by two monster trucks, freestyle quads and a jet dragster, along with fireworks.

The racing series will skip this weekend's regular Saturday night competition. After Tuesday's event, racing will not return to the track until Aug. 8.

Monster Trucks will play tug of war with a car chained between them and compete in freestyle car-crushing. Freestyle quads riders will perform tricks while jumping from ramp to ramp.

Japan's Toshiki Yoshioka, who won the inaugural drifting event at the speedway a year ago, will perform a D1 Drifting exhibition.

Racing will begin at 6 p.m. with the main event to start an hour later. The jet-engined dragster car-burn will lead into fireworks scheduled to end the show around 10 p.m.

General admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 12 and free for kids 5 and younger accompanied by an adult.

• NASCAR -- Hendrick Motorsports won't appeal this week's NASCAR penalties on drivers Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson and their crew chiefs.

Gordon and Johnson each were docked 100 points and crew chiefs Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus both were fined $100,000 and suspended for six races because their cars failed an initial inspection a week ago at Infineon Raceway.

Gordon car chief Jeff Meendering will serve as interim crew chief during Letarte's suspension beginning this weekend at New Hampshire International Speedway. Johnson car chief Ron Malec will fill in for Knaus.

Letarte and Knaus will resume track duties for their respective teams for the Aug. 19 race in Michigan. ...

Carl Edwards' No. 99 Ford will resemble a baseball this weekend when the Roush Fenway Racing team competes at New Hampshire.

Earlier this year owner Jack Roush sold half of his racing operation to Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox.

• DRAG RACING -- The NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series is competing this weekend for the first time in Norwalk, Ohio. The NHRA moved its longtime event from National Trail Raceway near Columbus to the northern part of the state. ...

Technicoat of Las Vegas is the new sponsor of the annual Top Fuel Shootout that will be contested during the NHRA pro tour stop Oct. 26-28 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The Shootout is for the top eight Top Fuelers over the 23 races before the Las Vegas event.

The first rounds of single elimination are run concurrently with Saturday qualifying. The winner of the additional championship round receives $100,000.

Las Vegans Bob Coffman and Glenn Williams, known at races as "the cowboys" for their western wear, own Technicoat. They are associate sponsors for Kalitta Motorsports and Ken Black Racing.
