NASCAR stock car race heads card at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

A tripleheader at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend is expected to attract more than 1,000 teams to the Bullring, drag strip and off-road stadium.

The featured race is Saturday night's 150-lap Open Comp Fall Classic, a NASCAR Super Late Models stock car race.

Southern Nevada racers won the past four Super Late Models titles: Dustin Ash (2010), Justin Johnson (2009), Matt Jaskol (2008) and Taylor Barton (2007).

Other featured 100-lap races will be for Lucas Oil Modifieds and NASCAR Late Models. Legends Cars, Bandoleros and Bombers also will compete.

Qualifying begins at 4:30 p.m. today, and racing starts at 6 p.m. Saturday.

■ NHRA DRAG RACING -- The Short Line Express Mark Division 7, one of the year's biggest NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series regional races, runs today through Sunday at the drag strip.

An anticipated field of 700 teams will participate, the result of many out-of-state teams remaining in Las Vegas after last weekend's NHRA national event, before heading off to Pomona, Calif., for next weekend's season finale.

The top category will be 270 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters, in which Boulder City's Duane Shields is vying for the national championship. Justin Lamb of Las Vegas is first in the division's Comp Eliminator standings and fourth in the Super Stock category.

Gates will open at 7 a.m. today through Sunday, with racing scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. today and Saturday. Championship eliminations start at 8 a.m. Sunday.

■ OFF ROAD -- Brian Deegan has a 47-point lead over Las Vegas' Rob MacCachren in the Pro 2 Unlimited truck division heading into the Lucas Oil Off Road Series race Saturday and Sunday at the off-road stadium.

In Pro 4 Unlimited trucks, Carl Renezeder of Arizona is first with a 23-point lead over the late Rick Huseman, who was killed in a plane crash near Barstow, Calif., last month.

Gates will open at 9 a.m. both days, with racing scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
