Tony Stewart finally broke through at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, winning the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the track for the first time after 13 frustrating attempts.
Stewart pulled away from Jimmie Johnson on a restart with four laps left to take the Kobalt Tools 400.
“I’m just glad to finally win one here,” Stewart said after the race. “We were so close last year and had a dominant car. I’m not sure we had a dominant car (this time), but we had an awful fast (one).”
In the Nationwide Series Sam’s Town 300, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. came out of a pit stop to take the lead for good with 55 laps remaining. It was a key victory in what would be his second consecutive Nationwide championship.
“The guys on pit road did an awesome job to get us out first,” Stenhouse said. “Obviously, we showed today that we’re here to win.”
