Off-road series set to open in Primm

The inaugural event in the Lucas Oil Off Road Series is scheduled for this weekend in Primm behind Buffalo Bill’s.

The off-road stadium series is trying to fill the void left by the demise of the Championship Off Road Racing Series, which raced at the Primm track last year.

Racing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Duane Shields of Boulder City has won the last two NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster titles this year, but he will not be competing this weekend.

Shields is competing in an NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Divisional 2 race in Cecil, Ga., trying to earn division points in pursuit of his first NHRA national championship. …

Professional drag racers Jeg Coughlin Jr., Tommy Johnson Jr., Cory McClenathan and Doug Kalitta will compete Saturday at the speedway’s Bullring oval track in the annual Thunder Roadsters NHRA Stars race. Kalitta, a former winner in World of Outlaws winged sprint cars, is the prohibitive favorite.

Also on the card are USAC Focus Midget Series, Super Late Models, Chargers, Bombers, Legends Cars and Bandoleros. Racing begins at 5:45 p.m.
