Reports: Kyle Busch, Childress involved in altercation after truck race

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Clint Bowyer finally won a NASCAR race in his home state, dominating throughout Saturday's Trucks Series race to snap Kyle Busch's three-race winning streak.

And Busch, who is currently on probation, might have more to worry about than his snapped streak.

NASCAR is looking into reports that Busch and 65-year-old car owner Richard Childress were involved in an altercation after the race at Kansas Speedway.

Busch finished sixth, a spot behind Richard Childress Racing driver Joey Coulter after the two had a spirited late battle for position. Busch drove up beside Coulter's truck following the race. When asked what happened between the two, Coulter joked that, according to the spotters, Busch was just congratulating him.

Busch is on probation through June 15 following a postrace, pit-road confrontation with RCR driver Kevin Harvick at Darlington. On May 24 in North Carolina, the Las Vegas native was cited for careless and reckless driving and speeding after driving 128 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Bill Janitz, a spokesman for Busch, said in an email that "there won't be any comment tonight." A phone message left for Richard Childress Racing seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Those issues had no effect on Bowyer, who grew up 90 miles away in Emporia, Kan. He started second on Saturday and quickly took control of the 167-lap, 250-mile race on the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

A late caution forced a restart with 30 laps to go, but Bowyer easily pulled ahead of Johnny Sauter and cruised unchallenged to his third career trucks win and first this season.

Sauter finished second, followed in the top 10 by Todd Bodine, James Buescher, Joey Coulter, Busch, Las Vegan Brendan Gaughan, rookie Nelson Piquet Jr., Brad Sweet and Travis Kvapil.

■ NATIONWIDE -- At Joliet, Ill., Justin Allgaier caught and passed Carl Edwards on the final lap as both cars ran out of fuel, with Allgaier hanging on to win the Nationwide STP 300 at his home track, Chicagoland Speedway.

Edwards led most of the night, fought off an earlier challenge from Elliott Sadler and was apparently on his way to a fourth series victory of the year.

But Allgaier sped past coming into the third turn, and Edwards couldn't respond because he was out of fuel. And then seconds later so was Allgaier, who somehow coasted to the finish line for the win, with Edwards second as both fought off fast-closing Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne.

Bayne hadn't raced since April 23 after fighting a mysterious illness. And even though he spent time at the Mayo Clinic, doctors weren't sure of the causes of the inflammatory condition. Symptoms included impaired vision, fatigue, nausea and initially some numbness in his arm.

But he was plenty good Saturday night after starting 31st and working his way up to finish third.

■ NHRA -- At Englishtown, N.J., Cruz Pedregon was the fastest qualifier in Funny Car for the NHRA SuperNationals.

Pedregon laid down an impressive run on a cool and overcast day during the third round of qualifying to take away the top spot from Robert Hight. Pedregon made a blistering 4.048-second run at 302.82 mph in his Toyota Camry to take his second No. 1 qualifier of the season.

Del Worsham (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) led their divisions.
