South Point also to host bike racing

The AMA Supercross series returns to Las Vegas for the 21st year Saturday night, when four of the riders at Sam Boyd Stadium will have a chance to win the season championship.

No tickets are available at Sam Boyd, but two other major Supercross-style events will take place this weekend at the South Point's Equestrian Center.

The Minimoto SX World Finals for high-powered minibikes are today, with championship races at 7:30 p.m.

On Sunday, more than 460 riders will compete in the Amateur National Arenacross Championships at 10 a.m.

■ MEET RIDERS -- ESPN-ABC motor sports reporter and Las Vegan Jamie Little will host the annual National Night of Champions at Carter Powersports (6275 S. Decatur Road) from 3 to 6 p.m. today.

Supercross riders scheduled to attend include Ryan Dungey, Kevin Windham, Brett Metcalfe, Trey Canard, Josh Grant, Justin Barcia, Blake Wharton, Eli Tomac, Justin Bogle, Will Hahn, Cole Seely, Travis Baker and Christian Craig.

The event is free to the public.

■ TRUMP BACKS OUT OF INDY 500 -- Real estate mogul Donald Trump said he will not be the celebrity pace-car driver for the Indianapolis 500 on May 29, pulling out because it would be inappropriate because "he may be announcing shortly his intention" to run for president.

Trump's replacement could be four-time Indy winner A.J. Foyt.

■ HUNTER REMEMBERED -- Denny Hamlin, Juan Pablo Montoya and Brian Vickers were among several Sprint Cup drivers who turned out to celebrate late NASCAR executive Jim Hunter.

The three teed it up Thursday at the Florence (S.C.) Country Club in the Jim Hunter Memorial Golf Tournament, the first of what is expected to be several moments of remembrance for Hunter at Darlington Raceway this weekend.

Hunter, a former Darlington president, died of cancer in October at age 71.
