NFL launches subscription service, but excludes live games

The NFL on Monday launched a new subscription service for football fans — NFL Game Pass. But if you want to watch the games live...you're out of luck.

The service, which will cost $99 per year, will give fans access to every NFL game all season long, but you won't be able to watch any of the games live.

Users will be able to listen to live gameday audio, but will have to wait until the game has ended to watch the actual game.

"You've seen so much growth in these pure-play native digital apps likeNetflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime," NFL Chief Digital Officer Perkins Miller told CNBC. "As we looked at what we could do with our premium content, the preseason games, our games on demand, we said if we could unify that into one package and make it easy for our fans, I think we'd be aligning ourselves with the trajectory of online video consumption for premium content providers."

The content will be available across multiple devices — desktop, tablet, smartphone and television — and will also be available on Xbox and Apple TV soon.

Users will also have access to thousands of past games from 2009 to present, coaches film, condensed games and more.

Fans can test drive NFL Game Pass before committing to the $99 subscription with a 7-day free trial.
