No. 24 Boise State hangs on for victory vs. New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Joe Southwick passed for 311 yards and three touchdowns, and Timmy Smith knocked down a fourth-down pass with two minutes to go Saturday to help No. 24 Boise State beat New Mexico 32-29 on Saturday.

Boise State (3-1, 1-0 Mountain West Conference) led by 25 points at halftime, turning three Lobos fumbles into 18 points. New Mexico (2-3, 0-1) turned two Broncos second-half fumbles into touchdowns to close the gap.

The Lobos did not throw a pass in the second half until their final play, but baffled the Broncos with their triple-option offense while rushing for 324 yards.

■ UNR 34, Texas State 21 - At San Marcos, Texas, Cody Fajardo threw for three touchdowns and ran for one more as the Wolf Pack (4-1, 1-0) beat the Bobcats.

Fajardo was 21 of 34 passing for 286 yards, connecting with Zach Sudfeld on two TD passes. Texas State (2-2) was held scoreless after halftime.

UNR running back Stefphon Jefferson was a workhorse, carrying the ball 40 times for 178 yards - just above his average of 174.6 coming into the game. His 40 carries were a career high. UNR extended its streak to 14 consecutive games with at least one 100-yard rusher.

■ Air Force 42, Colorado State 21 - At Air Force Academy, Colo., Cody Getz had 222 of the Falcons' 459 yards rushing, fueling Air Force (2-2, 1-1) to a rout of the Rams (1-4, 0-1).

Getz's career day made him the first player in Air Force history to begin a season with four consecutive 100-yard rushing games and the first with two 200-yard games in the same season since Chad Hall in 2007.

■ Fresno State 52, San Diego State 40 - At Fresno, Calif., Derek Carr threw for 536 yards and five touchdowns to make the first Mountain West game for the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0) a success.

Carr completed 42 of 56 passes against the Aztecs (2-3, 0-1). He is the fourth quarterback in school history to throw for 500 yards in a game, the first since his brother, David, in 2001.
