No. 8 Lobos secure outright league title

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Darington Hobson had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Roman Martinez added 19 points in his final game at The Pit, leading No. 8 New Mexico to a 73-66 win over Texas Christian on Wednesday night to secure the Lobos' first outright conference title in 16 years.

Dairese Gary added 14 points, making 4 of 6 free throws in the final 30 seconds as the Lobos (28-3, 14-2 Mountain West) won their 14th straight game and clinched their first outright regular-season league title since winning the Western Athletic Conference in 1994.

New Mexico also tied a school record for most wins in a season -- a 28-5 mark set in 1995-96.

Ronnie Moss led the Horned Frogs (13-17, 5-10) with 14 points.

■ No. 14 Brigham Young 71, Utah 51 -- At Salt Lake City, Brandon Davies scored a career-high 21 points, and Michael Loyd Jr. added 18 as the Cougars beat the Utes, giving BYU its third sweep of the state rivalry in the past four seasons.

The Cougars (27-4, 12-3) were able to celebrate their seventh victory over the Utes in the past eight meetings, but BYU's streak of three straight regular-season conference titles ended earlier in the night when No. 8 New Mexico clinched the championship with a win over Texas Christian.

Kim Tillie had 11 rebounds for the Utes (14-15, 7-8), but no Utah player scored in double figures.

■ San Diego State 68, Colorado State 55 -- At San Diego, Kawhi Leonard had 14 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Aztecs past the Rams (15-14, 6-9).

D.J. Gay added 16 points for San Diego State (21-8, 10-5), which finished its home regular season 14-1.
