NYC Marathon returns after 1-year absence

NEW YORK — The New York City Marathon has returned after a one-year absence.

The professional women started from Staten Island on Sunday morning. Last year’s event was canceled because of the destruction of Superstorm Sandy.

Security is heightened after the bombings at this year’s Boston Marathon. Barricades are set up around Central Park, where the 26.2-mile race ends.

Kenya’s Geoffrey Mutai is the defending men’s champ after winning in 2011. Ethiopia’s Firehiwot Dado is the reigning women’s champ.

More than 47,000 runners are expected to start the race through the five boroughs.
