Oregon back in BCS contention

Oregon charged back into national championship contention, jumping to fourth place in the Bowl Championship Series standings Sunday after its big victory over Stanford.

Louisiana State and Oklahoma State, both unbeaten, have the top two spots locked down and are on a path to meet in the BCS title game if they can stay perfect.

Alabama is third, hoping for a stumble by the top two. Oregon jumped from seventh last week to fourth with its 53-30 victory at Stanford.

The losses by Stanford and Boise State allowed Oklahoma to inch into fifth.

Boise State's loss dropped the Broncos to 10th and gives them little hope to reach a BCS bowl again. Undefeated Houston from Conference USA is 11th, solid position to be this year's BCS buster if it can keep winning.

Boise State was upset 36-35 by Mountain West Conference rival Texas Christian. The Broncos missed a 39-yard field goal as time expired.

One champion from the leagues without automatic BCS bids -- such as CUSA and the MWC -- can earn an automatic berth by finishing in the top 12 of the final standings.

Houston would become the first Conference USA team to play in one of the marquee bowl games.

Meanwhile, in The Associated Press poll, LSU was a unanimous No. 1, marking the first time since 2008 a team has received all the first-place votes during the regular season.

The Tigers (10-0), who have been No. 1 since Sept. 25, received all 60 first-place votes from the media panel. The last unanimous top-ranked team in the regular season was Texas on Oct. 26, 2008.

Oklahoma State (10-0) was No. 2 for the second straight week, but the rest of the top five was scrambled a bit after Boise State and Stanford lost for the first time.

Alabama moved up to No. 3, Oregon jumped two spots to No. 4 and Oklahoma was No. 5.

■ ILLINOIS -- Starting linebacker Trulon Henry will miss the rest of the regular season after he was shot in the hand during a large house party near campus.

Illini coach Ron Zook said Henry had surgery. Urbana, Ill., police said two others were wounded during the gunfire that happened before 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Zook said a handful of Illinois players -- largely underclassmen -- were at the party but were not injured. Zook said Henry only came to the party to clear out the other players when the gathering turned chaotic.

■ MISSOURI -- Running back Henry Josey, the Big 12's leading rusher with 1,168 yards, had surgery on his left knee after getting hurt in Saturday's 17-5 win over No. 21 Texas.

Josey tore the patellar tendon and also had tears to the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments, but doctors were confident the sophomore will make a full recovery. The timeframe for his return has not been determined.

■ TEXAS -- Senior running back Fozzy Whittaker's college career is over after he tore ligaments in his right knee early in the Longhorns' loss at Missouri.

Whittaker tore the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments. Whittaker, who battled injuries his entire career, was having his best season, with 995 all-purpose yards and a team-high nine touchdowns.

■ AUBURN -- Cornerback T'Sharvan Bell is out for the season with a knee injury, a significant blow to an already struggling secondary. Coach Gene Chizik said Bell will have surgery this week.

■ CINCINNATI -- Quarterback Zach Collaros will have surgery for a broken right ankle, sidelining him for the Bearcats' last three regular-season games. Collaros hurt the ankle during the second quarter of a 24-21 loss to West Virginia.
