Overdose may be factor in death of ex-Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson

A cause has yet to be determined in the death of former major league pitcher Tommy Hanson, but authorities believe an overdose is possible.

Ther former Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels right-hander was not breathing Sunday when emergency squads tried to assist him at a friend's home near Atlanta. But there was no indication from Coweta Couny sheriff's officials what might have resulted in the overdose.

An initial "crime incident" report included the word overdose. In a statement Wednesday, the sheriff's office said an officer spoke with hospital emergency room workers but didn't specify details of the conversation.

The 29-year-old Hanson died Monday night at an Atlanta hospital. He was visiting a friend on Sunday when rescue crews arrived and transported him to an emergency room.

The two people in the home are cooperating with the investigation and no charges have been filed.

"At this time, there is no indication or suspicion of foul play," sheriff's officials said.

Hanson, who pitched for the Braves from 2009 to 2012 and the Angels in 2013, spent the past two seasons in the minor leagues trying to work his way back to the big leagues.

"He was a favorite in the clubhouse and with our staff and he will truly be missed by everyone in Braves Country," Braves president John Schuerholz said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, family, former teammates and friends."
