‘Pacman’ cleared to practice

IRVING, Texas -- Adam "Pacman" Jones can join the Dallas Cowboys for everything but the regular season -- for now.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday he would decide by Sept. 1 whether to fully end Jones' suspension, which wiped out the entire 2007 season when he was with the Tennessee Titans. The Cowboys play their opener Sept. 7 at Cleveland.

In other Cowboys news, Terrell Owens and the team agreed to a three-year contract extension worth about $27 million, according to a person close to the negotiations who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The deal will eliminate the possibility that Owens would be playing out the final year of his contract this season, eliminating a potentially explosive topic.

Word of Owens' deal came a few hours after the league issued its decision on Jones.

"Commissioner Goodell told Jones that his continued participation in the NFL depends on demonstrating that he can conduct himself in a lawful and reliable manner," the league wrote in a statement. "Jones will be expected to continue the personal conduct program established for him by the NFL and the Cowboys and to avoid further adverse involvement with law enforcement."

Jones could be in action today when the team holds its next organized practice.

Jones was an elite cornerback and kick returner in his first two seasons with Tennessee, but an accumulation of arrests and legal problems -- including his connection to a shooting at a Las Vegas strip club -- led to his suspension without pay on April 10, 2007.

More trouble followed, including felony charges related to the strip club shooting, which left a bouncer paralyzed. Recent revelations include extortion payments to the alleged shooter, whom Jones helped police apprehend, and a $20,000 debt repaid to a Las Vegas casino after a felony theft warrant was threatened.

• BRONCOS -- Denver released running back Travis Henry, saying his commitment to the team was in question.

The Broncos signed Henry to a five-year, $22.5 million contract in March 2007. He was hampered by injuries in his only season in Denver, rushing for 691 yards on 167 carries with four touchdowns.

The NFL told him in September he had failed a test for marijuana and would be suspended for a year, but he challenged the test and the punishment and won.

• REDSKINS -- Washington signed free agent Stuart Schweigert, giving the team an extra option in the defensive backfield as it contemplates moving LaRon Landry from free safety to strong safety.

Schweigert is a free safety, having started 42 games in four seasons with Oakland. He lost his starting job late last season and was cut by the Raiders last month.

• PATRIOTS -- New England signed offensive lineman Oliver Ross, a 10-year veteran who was sidelined last season.

Ross spent two seasons with Arizona before missing all of 2007 with a triceps injury. He has played in 89 games with Dallas, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Arizona.

He was drafted by the Cowboys in 1998 in the fifth round, but his longest stint with any team was with the Steelers from 2000 to 2004.

CHARGERS -- Former Pro Bowl center Jeremy Newberry signed a one-year contract with San Diego, most likely as insurance in case Nick Hardwick isn't ready for the start of the season.

Hardwick had surgery on his sprained right foot on March 14. The team said at the time that he would need four to six months to recover.

Newberry started 14 games for Oakland last year. He was taken by San Francisco in the second round of the 1998 draft and went to the Pro Bowl after the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

• BILLS -- Police investigators want to talk to Marshawn Lynch after examining the Buffalo running back's vehicle, which allegedly struck and injured a pedestrian during a hit-and-run accident last weekend.

Buffalo Police Department spokesman Michael DeGeorge said investigators have attempted to contact Lynch and his lawyer.

• GIANTS -- Tom Coughlin added another former Jacksonville player to the New York roster, signing defensive end Renaldo Wynn.

A former first-round draft pick by the Jaguars in 1997, Wynn played five seasons with Jacksonville, four with Washington and last year with New Orleans.

• BEARS -- Chicago signed fourth-round draft pick Craig Steltz to a four-year contract.

The safety started 20 of 44 games at Louisiana State and had 184 tackles.
