Patrick Armstrong’s walk-off single sparks UNLV past James Madison

Patrick Armstrong’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave UNLV a 2-1 baseball victory over James Madison on Saturday in Clemson, S.C.

With the scored tied and one out in the inning, James Madison moved its left fielder to the infield to give it five infielders against Armstrong, who drove in Matt McCallister.

Armstrong finished 2-for-5 with the one RBI, Joey Armstrong was 2-for-4 and Justin Jones went 2-for-4 and scored the first run for the Rebels (29-16).

John Richy (8-3) pitched the distance for UNLV, allowing an earned run on six hits and one walk while striking out seven. The complete game was his fifth this season.

James Madison (15-28) took a 1-0 lead with three hits in the third, but Richy gave up only three more hits the rest of the game. The Rebels tied the game in the eighth when Jones scored on a wild pitch.

In the ninth, McCallister led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on Joey Armstrong’s grounder to second. Jones and T.J. White then were intentionally walked, setting the stage for Patrick Armstrong.

UNLV will play Clemson at 11 a.m. PDT today at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., the home of the Boston Red Sox’s Class A affiliate. The game will be televised on KVMY (12).
