Prep athletes a class act

Athletes at all levels gain recognition for the countless hours they spend honing their skills on the field of play.

Monday night at Sam's Town, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association honored 10 area athletes for the countless hours they spend hitting the books.

The athletes were selected as the NIAA Top 10 Student-Athletes of the Year, presented by Lifetouch photography.

The NIAA, in conjunction with the Review-Journal and Lifetouch, honors the best student-athletes in Southern Nevada each year. Each of the 10 athletes received a $500 savings bond and a souvenir portrait.

Following are the 2007-08 student-athletes of the year, listed alphabetically:

 

LENETTE BATTLE

SHADOW RIDGE

Battle was a two-sport standout, earning a total of seven varsity letters in girls basketball and track and field. She advanced to the state track meet in two individual events this past weekend, and was a three-year standout in basketball. Battle took 18 honors classes, posted an unweighted grade-point average of 3.982 and ranked third in a class of 446.

 

JARED DEAN

LAKE MEAD

Dean participated in four sports during his high school career, finishing with a total of seven varsity letters. An all-league basketball player, Dean helped lead the Eagles to the Class 1A state title in February. He also participated in football, golf and soccer. Dean posted a 4.0 GPA, and is tied for first in his class of 31 students.

 

JESSE HOUCHENS

CORONADO

Another four-sport athlete, Houchens accumulated six varsity letters: two in basketball, two in volleyball and one each in soccer and cross country. Ranked 45th in a class of 606, Houchens posted an unweighted 3.875 GPA. He took 15 honors classes.

 

ERIC LEIDER

CHEYENNE

Ranked first in a class of 428, Leider posted a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and took 19 honors classes. Leider was a starting guard on Cheyenne's state runner-up basketball team. He earned three varsity letters in basketball and three in cross country, placing 26th at the state meet as a senior.

 

DEVYN MOEN

PAHRUMP VALLEY

Moen ranked first in a class of 192 with an unweighted 3.83 GPA. She earned four varsity letters in track and field and three in soccer. She also participated on the dance team. Moen took 16 honors classes and served as student body president.

KOURTNEY MOODY

SPRING VALLEY

Moody was a three-sport standout who earned a total of nine varsity letters in girls basketball, cross country and track and field. Moody placed eighth at the state cross country meet as a senior. She posted a 3.789 unweighted GPA and took 18 honors classes. Moody ranked 34th in a class of 567.

 

FRANK SATTERFIELD

GREEN VALLEY

A first-team all-state football player, Satterfield rushed for 1,769 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior. He earned four varsity letters in track and field, two in football and one in basketball. Satterfield posted an unweighted GPA of 3.5, ranking 126th in a class of 580.

 

SAMANTHA SCOTT

PALO VERDE

Scott ranked first in a class of 716 with an unweighted 4.0 GPA. She took 15 honors classes, and earned a total of eight varsity letters in basketball, track and field and cross country. Scott served as team captain in all three sports.

 

NICK UNDERWOOD

SILVERADO

Underwood was a three-sport athlete, earning varsity letters in baseball, basketball and football. He had three varsity baseball letters and two in football, in which he served as the starting quarterback as a senior. Underwood posted an unweighted 3.65 GPA with 18 honors classes and ranked 22nd in a class of 557.

 

RANDALL VAN KEMPEN

MOUNTAIN VIEW

Van Kempen earned a total of 12 varsity letters in basketball, softball and volleyball. She was named the league Most Valuable Player in all three sports as a senior. Van Kempen posted an unweighted 3.65 GPA, ranking 11th in a class of 25.
