Prospects squad misses Babbitt

The Las Vegas Prospects didn't need Luke Babbitt on Sunday when they beat EBO/2K Sports. But they could have used the Galena High School star forward Monday.

Babbitt was going to play for the Prospects this summer but instead opted to suit up for EBO. Without him, the Prospects came up short in their quest to go undefeated in pool play at the adidas Super 64 Tournament, losing to KC Pump N Run 73-58 at Cox Pavilion. They were unable to rebound later Monday, falling to the Ohio Basketball Club, 82-72.

With their 1-2 pool-play record, the Prospects limped into single-elimination bracket play at 5 p.m. today when they'll face Student Athletes Broncos of New York at Rancho High School.

The Prospects had KC Pump N Run in trouble, holding a 51-47 lead with just over nine minutes left to play. But the Kansas City squad went on a 21-6 run to lead 68-57 with 1:30 left as the Prospects went cold.

"We missed a couple of shots and blew a couple of transition opportunities," Prospects coach Anthony Brown said. "Sometimes, we get in a rush and we need to slow down just a little."

Las Vegas Dynasty Elite, the other local entrant in the Super 64 Open Division, had a tough time in pool play, going 0-3. The team, coached by former UNLV guard Jevon Banks, lost to Team Access from Washington 81-62, were routed by Utah Pump N Run 96-67 and fell to Team Philly, 72-68.

Dynasty Elite will open bracket play at 5 p.m. today at Las Vegas High School against a team to be determined.

In the Reebok Summer Championships, Triple Double Elite, the lone local entry in the pre-ranked 56-team draw, went 1-2 in pool play. Triple Double Elite lost to the Michigan Hurricanes 73-55 Sunday, bounced back Monday morning to defeat D-One Sports of North Carolina 73-59, then fell later in the day to West Side (Wash.) Hoops 73-58 at Green Valley High School.

West Side opened the game with an 18-2 spurt and Triple Double was just 5 of 27 from the floor in the first half as the local squad trailed 37-20 at the intermission.

"They thought they could play the same way as they did in the morning, and in this tournament, you can't do that," Triple Double coach Tyrell Jamerson said. "We looked tired in the first half. Our legs weren't under us and our shots were short.

"If we could've played the first half the way we did the second, it could have been a different outcome."

Triple Double, which was led by Wade Collie's 20 points and Ali Sabra's 18, pulled within 59-51 with just over three minutes remaining but could get no closer. Bracket play in the Reebok tourney begins today and Triple Double will face Team CBIZ 15s of Ohio at 8 a.m. at Green Valley.

Southern Nevada Power House played its way into the Open Division bracket by going 3-0. Power House, led by Dana Kendrid's 24.3-point average over the first three games, defeated HEB Rockets of Texas 100-64, West Valley (Calif.) Stars 81-54, and Colorado Chaos 17s Green, 90-72. It will play Houston Elite at 8 a.m. today at Coronado High School in the opening bracket-play contest.

Las Vegas Dynasty Red also won its pool, going 3-0 by beating the Arkansas Hawks 65-63, Highland 64-46, and Urban DFW Elite in overtime, 73-68. Dynasty Red moved into the Open bracket and will play at 11:45 a.m. today at Coronado against the Oregon Rebels.

At The Main Event, the Las Vegas Magic is 2-0 in pool play with wins over Villa Park Spartans 75-37, and French Hoops, 69-68.

The Magic plays its last game in its pool against Waco (Texas) Basketball at 10:10 a.m. today at Western High School. A win would put the Magic in the Platinum Division bracket, where the top teams reside.

The Las Vegas Dogcatchers finished pool play 2-1 after defeating Riverside Eleate 77-57 and The Force (Colo.), 75-58.
