Return of QB buoys Faith

Max Done's wrist injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Faith Lutheran's football team.

His return couldn't have been timed much better.

Done went down right before games against the league's toughest opponents -- Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley -- and the Crusaders lost both games.

But Done returned to complete 30 of 39 passes for 456 yards and six touchdowns in the final two weeks of the regular season, and now the quarterback is healthy as the Crusaders get a second shot at Moapa Valley in the Class 3A Southern League playoffs. Faith Lutheran (6-3) plays the Pirates (6-3) at Overton at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"When we played Moapa the last time, we didn't have a full squad, so we're excited about the challenge," Faith Lutheran coach Jake Kothe said.

Defending Class 3A state champion Virgin Valley (9-1) hosts Boulder City (3-6) in the other Southern League playoff game, also on Saturday.

Kothe said Virgin Valley and Moapa Valley, which met in last year's state championship game, appear to have picked up where they left off.

"There's no question that they're good football teams," Kothe said.

• MORE FOOTBALL -- The Class 2A Southern League football playoffs also begin this weekend. The Meadows (6-3) hosts Lincoln County (5-3) at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Mustangs beat the Lynx 28-20 earlier this season.

Local Class 1A teams also begin their playoff rounds, with Indian Springs (6-3) playing at Pahranagat Valley (8-1) at 7 p.m. Friday and Mountain View (7-2) playing at Tonopah (8-1) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

• 3A SOCCER -- The Class 3A Southern League soccer tournaments begin today at Bettye Wilson Park.

The semifinal games in the boys and girls tournaments will be at 4 and 6 p.m. today. The boys championship game is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, with the girls game to follow at 12:30 p.m.

• VOLLEYBALL -- Mountain View will host the Class 1A Southern Region girls volleyball tournament Friday and Saturday. Play begins at 3 p.m. Friday, with matches resuming at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Class 2A Southern League tournament will be at Lincoln County on Saturday, with the first match at noon.

The Class 3A Southern League tournament will be Friday at Boulder City, beginning at 3 p.m.
