‘Sorry, Arnie’: Garrigus tops at Canadian Open

ANCASTER, Ontario - Robert Garrigus broke the 54-hole scoring record at the Canadian Open, a mark first set more than a half-century ago by Arnold Palmer.

Now he needs to finish like the King.

On rain-softened greens that took the bite out of Hamilton Golf & Country Club, Garrigus combined his power with some timely putts for a 6-under-par 64 on Saturday that gave him a one-shot lead over William McGirt, who lost ground despite a 66.

Bonanza High School product Scott Piercy, tied for the lead after a first-round 62, shot his second straight 67 and was two strokes off the lead.

Garrigus had a 16-under 194 total, one shot better than Palmer in 1955 at Weston Golf & Country Club outside Toronto, and matched two years ago by Dean Wilson at St. George's Golf & Country Club. Palmer went on to win the 1955 Canadian Open for the first of his 62 titles on the PGA Tour.

Garrigus will be going for his second win, although the tournament is a long way from being settled.

"Oops. Sorry, Arnie," Garrigus said when told about the record.

Piercy dropped two shots on the back nine to fall off the lead, though he added two birdies to stay close to the leaders.

■ LPGA - At Paris, former Bishop Gorman High School standout Inbee Park shared the lead with Stacy Lewis after three rounds of the LPGA Tour's Evian Masters.

Park, who was three shots behind leader Lewis heading into the round, shot 2-under 70 for an 11-under 205 total. Lewis, chasing her third title of the year, had a 1-over 73 in a round that included two bogeys and a double bogey on the back nine before a birdie on the 18th.

Karrie Webb (67), Henderson resident Natalie Gulbis (68) and 17-year-old amateur Hyo Joo Kim (69) of South Korea were one shot behind the leaders.

Gulbis, the 2007 champion, had an eagle on the ninth hole.

■ CHAMPIONS - At Turnberry, Scotland, Bernard Langer shot 4-under 66 for a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples heading into the final round of the Senior British Open.

Couples had seven birdies in a round of 64, while Peter Fowler finished with a 65 to trail Langer by two shots.

Langer was at 7-under 203.

■ EUROPEAN PGA - At Atzenbrugg, Austria, Bernd Wiesberger had a 7-under 65 to win the Austrian Open by three strokes for his second European PGA Tour title.

The Austrian, four strokes off the lead going into the final round, finished with a 19-under 269 total. Shane Lowry (66) of Ireland and Thomas Levet (68) of France tied for second.
