This night, Generals pull rank on Globetrotters

If the baseball season ended today, the Chicago Cubs would be firmly in the playoffs. And now comes news the Washington Generals have folded.

Park OK winning ‘under the radar’

“Anything You Can Do”€ was a song written by Irving Berlin for a Broadway musical called “€œAnnie Get Your Gun.”€ It was written in 1946.

Stanley Cup makes grand entrance at MGM Grand

There was another grand entrance at the MGM Grand on Monday afternoon involving a sporting icon. But hockey’s Stanley Cup was not wearing a TMT jump suit, which is what Floyd Mayweather Jr. was wearing at the MGM’s previous grand entrance.

Cowboy Spring Break not your grandpappy’s rodeo

The renegade PBR still blazes its own trail, bringing a pool party, bikini contest, high-voltage concerts and, of course, tough cowboys trying to ride angry bulls to Las Vegas this weekend. The audacity even surprises the PBR founders.

Retiring Jim Reitz has boat to float after 35 years at UNLV

He still gets up at 5:30 a.m., only now there’s not much to do. It’ll probably take a couple more weeks to remove all the stuff from his office, because one accumulates a lot of office stuff over 35 years as coach.

Fairway surfing anything but rough ride

The GolfBoard aims to draw a younger demographic to golf. So far, the only place you can ride one around the fairways is at Las Vegas National Golf Club.

NASCAR gets kick to the head

Sprint — whose new boss is a soccer guy — is latest sponsor to defect from NASCAR. The turmoil continues as many tracks are downsizing the great speedways, so TV viewers don’t see empty seats.

Madlock’s lessons not limited to batter’s box

It was Thursday, midafternoon, and it was a little stuffy at the climate-controlled batting cages in an industrial park on McLeod Drive not far from the airport called The Dugout. It’s hard to control climate when guys toting baseball bats keep barging through an open door to take their cuts.

Another reason to love NASCAR: The Wonder Bread car

On Friday, 18-year-old Dylan Kwasniewski did something never done in NASCAR’s developmental touring divisions; on Sunday, 35-year-old Kurt Busch drove a car painted up in Wonder Bread colors. This being NASCAR, it’s probably not hard to guess which of these generated the most publicity.

Buff, bronzed paddleboarders stand up to gentle tides at Lake Las Vegas event

During down time at the Hennessey’s World Paddle Championships at Lake Las Vegas on Saturday, they played a lot of Creedence Clearwater Revival over the public address system. They should have played the “Hawaii Five-O” theme by the Ventures, because this sport — stand-up paddleboard racing — looks like something you’d see during the opening credits of the TV detective series.

Indy win sinks in for co-owner Vasser

It is Friday afternoon and Jimmy Vasser, the former race-car driver, is waiting on a Cobb salad at the Canyon Gate Country Club grill. In the distance are tranquil lagoons, the No. 2 tee box and the house in which Vasser has sort of lived the past 16 years, because race-car people tend to crisscross the globe and so they are not home a lot.
