Sunrise coasts past Sunset in all-star game

Northeast League Most Valuable Player LaBrea Walker opened the Sunrise/Sunset senior girls basketball all-star game with a 3-pointer, and the Sunrise Region never looked back en route to a 40-20 win Wednesday at Basic.

Walker, a point guard at Desert Pines, finished with eight points and hit two of the game's four 3-pointers.

Chaparral's Janae Neuville also had eight points for the Sunrise, and Canyon Springs' Shante Thomas scored seven. Neuville also had three of her team's seven first-half steals as the east side of town took control early.

Basic's Marquichea Burns, who played for the Sunset Region after donning the wrong color jersey in pregame warm-ups, led the west side of town with six points.

Durango's Cherelle Hicks added five points off the bench for the Sunset, which scored only seven points in the first half.

The Sunset made only 5 of 17 field goals, compared with 13 of 23 for the Sunrise.

The game was contested in two 20-minute halves, with a running clock for all but the final two minutes of each half.

Before the game, the Southwest League all-stars edged the Northwest, 36-34, on a jumper by Bishop Gorman's Zhane Dikes.

Sierra Vista guard Jeanette Jackson led the Southwest with 10 points. Mountain Lions teammate Johnie Pride scored six and Gorman's Amber Lane five.

Palo Verde sophomore Jasmin Kiley scored 10 points for the Northwest.

Amanda Delgado of Liberty tallied 18 points to lead the Southeast League to a 46-31 win over the Northeast in the first game of the night.

Patriots teammate Jade Washington scored 10.

Junior forward Kenosha Wright had nine points to pace the Northeast.
