OFFENSE GROUNDED

You want high-flying offense? Go watch the Lakers. Neither UNLV nor Wyoming are distinguishing themselves when it has the ball as the first 15 minutes produced a grand total of three points, thanks to a 38-yard Kyle Watson field goal.

Trailing 3-0 with just over six minutes to go in the first quarter and facing a fourth-and-2 at the UNLV 38, Wyoming coach Joe Glenn took a shot and went for it. Chris Stutzreim, the Cowboys’ fourth-string quarterback, tried to make the necessary yards on his own but the Rebel defense stopped him an inch short at the UNLV 37.

But the ensuing drive stalled and Watson’s 37-yard field goal try with 4:25 to go was wide left, making him 1-for-2 so far.

He’s in because Brett Jaekle has missed too many kicks this year. The former Bonanza High kicker is 5-for-10 on FG tries.

OUT OF CONTROL

Usually, it’s UNLV that is guilty of committing stupid penalties. Not tonight, so far.

Instead, it’s Wyoming that has two personal foul calls against it which helped keep UNLV drives alive.

Through the first quarter, Wyoming has racked up 35 yards in penalties yet the Cowboys only trail 3-0.

CROWD PICKS UP

Eventually, a few thousand more managed to find their way into Sam Boyd Stadium on a beautiful fall night for football. Game time temperature was 75 degrees.

There’s probably 9,000 watching.

Good thing it’s in Las Vegas. In Laramie, the temperature at kickoff was 41 degrees with 47-mph winds, making the wind chill temperature 29.

Brrr.
